The Megaverse is a complicated string of worlds. For our main string -- the one we follow -- there are five characters which are consistent along all of the worlds.
These five are:
Steve,
Alex,
Notch,
Herobrine,
And the Ender Dragon, JeanThe first world in which they all exist is the world that will then carry these five through time eternally, living different lives but telling the same story.
What story?
The Protector knew it would need these core lessons to teach to the other Protectors coming after it. If not learning these things, the future Protectors could potentially wander from their world, abandoning it and all who lived on it.
In their first world/life, these five were chosen for exhibiting these exact traits, in which would always tell the same story time and time again.

The first is Steve: exhibiting both perserpverence and hope. Even in his darkest hour, he sought hope. And even when he had lost it, he would ALWAYS find it again.
The second is Alex: exhibiting the aspects of the importance of free will and choosing to care for others. She joined the rest some time later, but was a very important addition, for she taught that care and affection comes hand in hand with the free will to do so.
The third is Notch: Unlike the first two, he does not exhibit such a positive lesson. Instead, his is much more morally grey. He exhibits the trials of power, specifically what one can do with such power. Good...or evil. Both are possible. And both have their consequences. But it is overcoming this temptation to do evil which is his true virtue.
The fourth is Herobrine: His is also in the grey zone. His is a case of failure, of betrayal, and, eventually, a story of redemption. For one must understand that even if they did terrible things in the past, there is still room for forgiveness.
The fifth is Jean, the dragon: exhibiting negative aspects of corruption, the dragon is a constant reminder to anyone who sees, that though forgiveness is available, there are consequences -- punishments even -- for such actions, if NO repentance has taken place. She is trapped; suffering; treated as and defeated -- time and time again -- as a monster, all for shooting to become one.
