In immortal universe: there is God, who for some reason gave a mortal the power over life and death itself. Instead what most people assumed: taking immortality for himself and ruling a nation for all eternity or something, he instead gave everyone ELSE immortality except for himself. This was later seen as a malicious act, as without the ability to die, any and all sufferings would be eternal, like Hell on Earth for some, literally. But thankfully God took back over, having to painstakingly remove the immortality from each person before they were created. Those he missed would simply go on to be the immortals of that world.
Or at least that's what everyone was taught, mostly as a way to see immortals as, in a way, lower than the rest. To shun them for not being "fully human." While death itself wasn't necessarily a good thing, having the ability to do so was seen as a personal gift from God. Those who were immortal were simply the "unlucky" ones.
In reality, God had given such power over life and death to his own *son,* who simply chose to live out his life as a mortal with the rest of his father's creations. (Obvious Jesus parody) but as he lived, this mortal God handed out such power to those who needed it most, such as those who were very sick and dying. By the end of his mortal life, God's son had given away so much of this power that many began being able to use and control this power, becoming immortals themselves in a sense. This power spread like a virus, until nearly EVERYONE was immortal on some degree. While by many this was seen as good, by many more this was seen as bad, and so they took this problem to God's son himself. (This God being like an alternate universe version of the one we have...if there ever was one.) Eventually this lead God to make it his job to remove immortality from those who were born next, and "angels" with the ability to strip immortals of their immortality were sent out to gather that from those who still had it. However, God still left a select few with their immortality, even assigning many with watch over some elemental power. (Could be reasoning that since God is so busy with making sure not everyone is born with immortality, he needs help, but that would also make him not limitless... Oh well, it would be a good metaphor for Christians doing God's will on earth I guess. *Shrugs*) So for the immortals who grew up being told they were God's mistake and that because of it they were lower than the rest, they could find out that that actually isn't the case at all, and through that finally find their purpose.
