I woke up in Jenna's office on her couch. She was sitting at her desk, sitting back in her chair, nibbling on her thumbnail as she looked at me. My head was pounding and it felt as if the room were spinning. I slowly sat up.
"What happened?" my voice was groggy.
"I happened," a voice came from the right - by the door.
I turned my head to the right and saw Melissa Dixon leaning against the wall, her arms folded against her chest as she looked at me. I knew Melissa had been friends with Natalie once upon a time, but at some point, they stopped. The last I heard, she was in Chicago.
"Do you need an ice pack?" Jenna got up and went to her fridge and grabbed an ice pack. She walked over to me and tossed it onto my lap.
I put the ice pack on my face. "What happened?"
"I already told you - I happened," Melissa repeated. "That's the knock out you deserved when you took Jessie."
I glared at her. "She's not your daughter."
"So... you and Yasmine are friends?" Jenna sat down on the table right in front of the couch. "On social media and in life?"
"No," I shook my head.
"No, but you are," she shook her head. "That was more of me telling you - not asking. Nyla... you've been lying to me. You are still caught up in Natalie's twisted games and you've been lying to me this whole time."
My eyes widened. How did she know? There was no way Natalie told her - she still wanted to get her hooks into King. She wouldn't expose me. I was her ticket to him.
"I told you," Mel laughed a little as she stood up. "Can I finish what I started?" she moved towards me.
"No," Jenna stood up and walked away.
"Can I call Joel and tell him to kick her backstabbing ass out?"
I looked at her. "He would never do that."
"Yeah, he would. One - he's been crushing on Jenna since high school and two - he wants back in Moreno's good graces after fucking Yasmine. He will kick you out if it means Moreno is cool with him again."
I looked at Jenna to try and gauge her response. She was chewing on her bottom lip as she looked at me. After a few moments, she walked away and said that she had to get ready to perform.
"Should I get ready to work tonight?" I asked.
She didn't answer.
I stood up and started after her, but Melissa stood in my way. "I'd go home if I were you. Your free ride is done."
"It's not what you think," I sighed. "She's my cousin - yeah, we still speak. But, Jenna is..."
"If you fix your lips to say 'my best friend' I am going to knock you out again. She is not your best friend. No... you know what, maybe she is. She's probably your only friend, but you are not hers," Melissa interrupted me.
"I don't even know who you are or why you feel you can stand here and say anything."
"Because I am one of her best friends. Ricky and then me."
"You haven't been around in years. I've never met you."
"And? Distance doesn't destroy a friendship. Lies do that."
"It's a misunderstanding."
"Excuse me," a tall, dark man towered in the doorway. He was wearing a black shirt that was quite snug and pair of jeans. I saw the coils from his headset and knew he was security. His voice was deep. "Jenn asked me to escort you off the property."
