"Come on, Lacey! You'll look stunning!" Donita called from the other side of the door.
A month ago, she'd never be caught dead in something like this. And it wasn't like she didn't like to dress up. She liked to get fancy for school dances or weddings. But a full-length dress is the last thing she'd choose. Lacey Kratt was, ugh how do you say this, a more practical person.
But surprisingly, she liked how she looked in it. Especially with her hair curled and the natural makeup look. She didn't like how the heels made her taller, though. Like Martin, she had always been a bit taller than average, and the heels almost made her feel more insecure. And she didn't like how it was hard to walk in them.
"I'll..be out in a second."
She took another look at the dress and smiled. Donita had designed it and made it to fit Lacey's personality. It was a beautiful hot pink (but not too hot pink) with leaves of the same color completely covering the bodice and sprawled across the skirt, the fabric foliage stopping at her mid-thigh. The dress covered her feet and touched the floor, hiding the thin, strap heels that would probably break her ankles. The neckline was a sweetheart and it was strapless, a corset-style tying holding it up in the back. It truly was a beautiful a-line ball gown.
She wondered what Martin and Chris would be like if they saw her like this. Sure, they'd seen her dressed up for homecoming, but that was a short dress. In this, they would've called her a fairy bride. And she wasn't sure if that was a good or a bad thing.
She then walked over to the door and opened it, letting Donita gasp and silently praise her work.
"Oh, I KNEW it would look fabulous on you!" she said, walking around and touching the skirt. She ran her fingers over the leaves and smiled. "How do you feel, darling?"
"I'm not sure."
"Well, just know that you're going to make everyone's jaw drop! Now, I didn't give you your mask yet, right?"
"What mask?"
"See, this is the thing you caught us speculating about at dinner the other day! This is going to be a masquerade ball. Mostly for the villains who want to remain anonymous. It's a whole ordeal. But don't you worry, I've designed the best mask for you. You're going to look stunning."
Lacey smiled and Donita grabbed a canvas bag on a nearby chair. As she was walking back, she took the masquerade mask out of the bag and smiled.
"I believe it'll be a perfect fit. Try it on."
She placed it in Lacey's hands and Lacey stared down at it. She wasn't quite sure what it was made of, but the right side was the color gold with hot pink, glittery swirls. A thin line of the same pink glittery stuff outlined the eye hole as well. But the left side was where all the action was happening.
The base looked to be the same color of hot pink. But that wasn't what she had her attention on. It was the gold butterfly wing taking up the entire left side. And it wasn't the same shade of gold as the right side, it was the same color as real gold. It wasn't real gold, for it would be too heavy to hold, but it was just as beautiful. The wing was made of some sort of metal and it had a swirly piece attached and going down the middle and nose. The wing had such detail, Lacey was impressed that Donita thought of it. It seemed more of a Zach invention.
There were mesh-looking parts, fancy carvings, pink and white jewels, and intricate detail, all in gold. And to make sure it would stay on her face, there was a black ribbon attached.
Lacey brought it up to her face and before she could tie the ribbon, Donita rushed over and took the ties from her.
"It would look better if it was tied under your hair. Could you hold it up?" she asked.
