rue, jules and i had been sitting in the cafeteria when nate jacobs walked through the doors with two policemen behind him.
"what the actual fuck." rue said.
we watched as he walked through the halls head held high.

"i texted maddy but she isn't responding."
"maybe this has to do with the whole carnival thing that happened." rue suggested.
"i mean what could have even happened when he pulled her away?" i asked.

"you don't think he like attacked her or something?" i was now really worried about maddy.
"he wouldn't right?" jules said.

"okay but are we gonna talk about you fucking nate jacobs dad?!"
"rue shut up, i told you not to talk about it." jules snapped.
"all i'm saying is what if they like paid you off not to talk about it."
"i'm being serious rue, this isn't funny," jules walked away and out the room.
"what's her problem?" rue said.

it wasn't until the next day i got a text from maddy telling me what had happened.
apparently the night of the carnival nate had choked her and left a bruise on her neck.
she got up yesterday three hours early to try and cover up the bruise with makeup.
she wore a turtleneck and a hoodie that day.
the ac in the school was broken and she passed out in class.
when the paramedics found her they saw the bruise and called the police.
that would explain him walking out with the policeman yesterday.
the worst part is after all of this we all knew maddy would still go back to him.
