The rumbling had slowly began to dissipate, and Y/N was able to get their footing without much issue. With the threat gone for the time being, the lab assistant was able to take in their surroundings for the first time in a while. At first glance it looked to be some sort of storage room, but further inspection revealed that the room was quite similar to one of the others further up: the control room. The crates littered around the room and the machinery set it apart from the norm, of course. They took a few wobbly steps towards what seemed to be a control panel, before remembering the doctor was in there with them. Best to ask for permission first.
"I can't believe we've been pushed so far down into our own lair by some...anomaly," Eggman huffed, kicking some of the gears on the ground. "If anything, I should be the one pushing those who interfere with my plans out of the way!" He paced around the room, stepping in perfect rhythm each time. Y/N had picked up through months of work that this was something the doctor did frequently while deep in thought. They simply watched him, wondering if he even knew that he did it.
I suppose it's...endearing, in a way, Y/N thought to themselves. Endearing? Were they out of their mind? No. That isn't the right word. Charming- NO! Maybe it's something less...like that. Captiva-
"Y/N?" Y/N looked up to see Eggman standing directly in front of them. "Are you feeling any better? I'm starting to worry whatever hit you previously has affected you more than it should have."
"No, no, Doctor Eggman! I assure you, I'm doing alright. The day's been exhausting, I assume I'm just tired." Y/N examined the doctor's facial expressions the best they could. Was he mad at them? His brow wasn't furrowed; in fact, it was quite the opposite. Y/N took a step forward, unsure of what to do next. "So," they asked, "what do we do now?"
"I need to reboot the old control panel. Perhaps I can get a reading on the energy levels Tails was picking up." The doctor walked up to Y/N, looking over their shoulder towards the control panel.
...
"Is that his name," Y/N guessed, "or is that something you came up with?"
"Well, his name is Miles, but I'd prefer you not mention that with anyone else," he explained. Y/N nodded, attempting to get out of the doctor's way. He tapped their shoulder softly. "Just a moment."
"Everything alright?"
"Yes...I just need to discuss something with you." The doctor stayed still, practically mumbling his response. He averted his gaze, looking to the left, to the right, and then back into Y/N's eyes. Y/N couldn't exactly tell; the doctor's glasses were practically opaque. "I've been meaning to talk to you for awhile. You see, your work here has helped me significantly, and I truly have grown fo-"
"Please," A mechanical voice wailed outside, "I've already explained to you! All you need is to have your voice chip fixed, and you'll realize how foolish you sound! I am not one of your 'cowpokes', or however you referred to me."
"Orbot?" Eggman and Y/N ventured, stepping away from each other.
"YEEEEEEHAW! You bet yer' sweet BIPPY yer' a circular cowpoke o' mine! Let's ha-have a look-around, shall we?" Y/N could practically feel Cubot's processors melting from where they stood. "I reckon-on-on we's find those two by the time it's early candle-light. Y/N!? EGGMAN!" Y/N stepped towards the door, seconds away from opening it, before Eggman held their arm and put his finger to their lips.
"Shh. I need...just a few more moments of quiet before I let them in here," he sighed. Y/N nodded, internally agreeing. It was one thing to deal with Cubot without a frying voice chip. They stood like this until the sounds of "yeehaw" and "why are you like this" faded completely. "Agh...I don't know how Cubot's the only one who experiences that voice chip nonsense. He and Orbot's voice chips are practically the same!" The doctor whispered something under his breath, but Y/N couldn't tell what it was. He took slow steps towards the control panel, tapping a few of the buttons in a random order, before pressing his hand down on the majority of them. The screen above the two flickered on, a faint buzzing enveloping the otherwise silent room. The buzzing continued with a somewhat frantic tapping sound that broke the silence every so often. Y/N watched from the side, not even close to comprehending what the doctor was doing. "Strange," the doctor added, "it seems as though the energy levels only recently disappeared. They were still here when Tails showed me his readings."
"I really doubt that a handheld device like his could detect the lower energy readings." Y/N had to admit that the fox's handheld was impressive, but if the energy levels were low enough, would it had even showed up on his readings? "Does that mean that whatever did it is completely gone?"
"Perhaps. It looks to be gone, but we don't know for how long it will stay like that." Eggman put a finger to the dusty panel, rubbing it with his thumb. More importantly, I need to find out what it was that caused the interference." He sighed, tapping away at the buttons on the control panel. Y/N nodded, making a round through the room to see if there was anything that they could do. Finding nothing, they returned to Eggman's side, trying to make sense of the monitor in front of them. The buzzing noise died down, or it seemed to, leaving the two in almost complete silence.
"So," Y/N asked, more of a mumble under their breath, "do you need help with anything?" The doctor stopped his work, turning towards Y/N with a small grin.
"Y/N, you've done enough for me already. Unless you understand how to work this, which I'd be impressed if you did, I'm afraid that there is not much left for you to assist me with. Why don't you rest for awhile?" He gave the lab assistant a playful nudge. "I believe you need it."
"Of course, Doctor Eggman. Let me know if that ends up changing." Y/N walked around a bit more, before deciding it would be best not to mess with anything in the room. They ended up sitting against the wall in the back, finally realizing just how exhausted they were. The room was silent; the only thing they could hear was a small tapping, accompanied by faint hums from the doctor. It wouldn't hurt to rest for a little while, right?
Y/N heard footsteps coming towards them, but didn't bother to open their eyes. If the doctor needed them, they would get up. They thought that the doctor was going to tap them awake, but they felt something...on them. The footsteps faded and the tapping continued in the back of Y/N's mind. Believing that Eggman was completely gone, they slightly opened an eye to see what happened.
Wrapped around them was a warm, soft blanket.
