"How has Dan been, recently?" My mum asked. Our pleasant conversation at dinner took an abrupt turn. My dad, who had just been talking to my brother about his new girlfriend, Cornelia, went quiet. Martyn examined me, too, equally as concerned.
I shuffled in my chair. "Dan's fine," I took a bite of my mashed potatoes, but they were far too mushy in my mouth all of the sudden. "Why?" I frowned.
My mum shrugged. "I haven't seen him in a while. That's all." The look on my family's faces told me very quickly that this wasn't a new subject between them.
"Yeah, so?" I scoffed defensively.
"It's just odd. You're always together." Her eyes turned soft and caring and I wanted to give in.
"Just busy, that's all." I didn't. She dismissed the conversation and her and my dad went back to interrogating my brother. I didn't care to join in or think about what they were saying. But, while my mother seemed to be done talking to me about Dan, she still glanced at me occasionally with sadness in her eyes because she was my mother and she knew.
She knew that deep down Dan wasn't busy and I had no idea how he had been. My best friend since kindergarten that was over almost every single day- even Christmas and Thanksgiving and Easter and every other holiday due to our family's inseparable bond- hadn't been over in two weeks. There was no possibility that it was caused by anything other than a fight between us.
I thought about calling him that night. Apologizing.
I didn't. I couldn't.
Friday night was quick to arrive. School dragged on all week. It was probably because, for the first since our fight, I was going out to hang out with a few friends. It wasn't my usual friend group because that friend group contained Dan and, well... I knew whose side they preferred.
I ended up at a party. This wasn't a usual occurrence, but it also wasn't an unusual occurrence. People were happily dancing, socializing, and more than happily drinking out of plastic cups. While I always stayed the content and sober designated driver, tonight was different.
The house was crowded and bustling with individuals, but I still picked Louise out of the crowd and my heart gave a sudden pang of disappointment. Her blond hair glowed beneath the fairy lights strung around- bobbing as she hopped to the beat of the music. Louise was another lifelong friend that I hadn't been around since our fight. It had only been two weeks, but I missed her almost as much as Dan.
I rushed into the kitchen and poured myself a large cup of the spiked punch that sat on the counter. I wanted to enjoy the night and where Louise was, Dan usually wasn't far behind and that was a conversation I couldn't have sober. I chugged the glass quickly and then got myself another. One became two, two became four, and four became... I hadn't even realised how much I drank until I fell over a chair trying to walk back into the living area.
While I had thought that this would fix my longing for Dan, being smashed only heightened that desire. The next time I saw Louise, I didn't cower in the corner in hopes to find a new distraction, I began to think about Dan and her connection to him. I surged up to her, with a loud and happy hello.
While her features read complete surprise and confusion, she didn't seem as angry as I thought she would be. "Hey, Phil," she said slowly. "I'm surprised to see you here."
"I knew you'd be surprised!" I don't know what I found funny about it, but I sure did find it funny. Giggles escaped my lips as I put my hand on her shoulder.
"Are you drunk?" She seemed worried for reasons my drunken state couldn't comprehend.
"Are you drunk?" The way she asked implied that there was something wrong with it, so I quickly passed her accusation back to her.
