"Circle up for Spin the Bottle!" Louise's shout from the living room suddenly interrupted our competitive game of pong.
The serious boys that we had been playing with quickly dropped the balls they were holding and scrambled to get to the living area to the other horny people that were excited to play this horrid game; the only thing that could break them of their focus. I looked over at Phil, the only person left in the room.
"I think we won," he joked. I laughed and then glanced over at the door they had just exited.
"Are you heading in there?" He shrugged at my question. "People are expecting you," I snickered.
Phil and I had been friends since we were little tykes. We were inseparable and did everything together. The only difference between us now that we were secondary school was that girls seemed to be much more into Phil than they were into me. They were always flirting and complimenting him and occasionally went as far as asking for his number. He had gone on a few dates, but never seemed too interested. I was sure people would be excited to get the opportunity to snog him in a random game of chance, more likely to get a kiss that way than trying to actually date him.
"They're expecting you, too, then," Phil smirked. It wasn't true for me in the way it was for him, but as I said, we did everything together so where Phil was, I wasn't far behind.
I followed him into the living area where a circle of about fifteen random bodies sat in a messy circle. After going around and introducing ourselves, the game began. I watched as girls pecked boys' lips and boys put on a show for girls. I watched as a girl spun the bottle and landed on Louise and drank as people cheered them on while they kissed. Phil and I had been laughing along, talking and drinking on the edge of the circle until some spins had passed and someone landed on Phil.
The girl was pretty, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She was much too short, though, and her choice in fashion proved to me that she was a bit too stylish for Phil, her nice clothes and brands pieced together masterfully. Phil never cared that much about that stuff. I watched as his gaze went from the bottle to her eyes, to the lips that he was about to be kissing.
Their kiss had been short; Phil reached up his hand, cupped her cheek, pecked her lips and then spun the bottle himself.
We all watched as it seemed to spin and spin and spin and spin and spin forever. Everyone eagerly waited to see who it would land on and were all shocked when it landed on me. We paused for a moment and looked around, but it was the second time this had happened tonight and everyone knew the unspoken rule: guys didn't kiss other guys in Spin the Bottle, Phil moved to spin it again.
It was at this point the evening took a turn for a worse, and it was all my fault. As I thought about this age-old, sexist game, I thought, "That shit would piss me off as a girl," to which Louise responded, "It does."
"What?" I asked, just understanding that what I had thought was in my head was certainly not.
"It does!" She said this a little louder, causing some to look away from the spinning bottle.
"What does?" Phil had made the mistake of wondering out loud. I was curious if it had anything to do with the fact that the bottle had now landed.
"How come I had to kiss Rachel but you don't have to kiss Dan?" Louise huffed. My eyes widened and I felt my face get hot as I realized what I had started. Girls in the circle were nodding along, agreeing with Louise because multiple had had to do the same thing, whether it was now or at other parties. Nervous murmuring, mainly from guys, bubbled up around me.
"It's just how it's always been," Phil shrugged, being the poor, innocent guy that was about to suffer the wrath of a woman fed up with misogyny. "I never said you had to kiss Rachel," Phil had meant it in an innocent way, I knew Phil. He had meant that he didn't want anyone to kiss anyone they were uncomfortable with. But to the woman, Phil looked like a douchey guy that agreed that it was hot when women kissed, so if it happened, it happened.
