The Arrow House, Warwickshire, 1924:

T O M M Y wondered a lot of times as to why Eleanor didn't want to marry him. After her first rejection to his proposal he had been flabbergasted let alone disappointed. He knew Eleanor loved him, however, and the timing of his first proposal had been bad timing, Tommy just didn't notice it at first.

A few months later, he had asked her again. Tommy had even bought a ring, a beautiful diamond ring to rest on her beautiful finger for the rest of their lives. And yet again she told him no. Tommy did feel bad, even a bit humiliated, but truth was, Eleanor wasn't okay. After Nina she had been traumatized, she had nightmares every night so Tommy knew that he had to be there for her and not push his own wishes onto her.

But Eleanor then became better. A miracle even occurred in their lives so Tommy truly believed that the third time would be the charm. Eleanor had told him no yet again. He got frustrated, craving to just put his family name on her, but Eleanor told him they had to wait. They had to focus on what was going on with their lives rather than some wedding. Eleanor told him she loved him no matter their status so Tommy eventually seized.

But as he'd lay at nights with her by his side, her entire soul calmer than it had been for a year, Tommy couldn't close an eye. He'd stare at the ceiling, hearing her calm breathing in his ear, and he'd think why she didn't want to become his wife. Perhaps, Eleanor felt ashamed she had no family to invite to the wedding. Or, perhaps she was ashamed to become his wife, because Tommy wasn't the best boyfriend, what to say about a husband. But he loved her, he respected her and so Tommy still wondered what had to happen so that Eleanor would tell him yes.

And one day when he hadn't expected it at all, she told him yes. He remembered that night quite vividly. He sat in his office in a manor he had bought for himself and Eleanor to live in and start their family. She loved the house, and surprisingly, so did he. It was big, it was expensive and luxurious. They had their own kitchen staff as well as maids to clean the house, and Tommy even had stables near the house they called Arrow House.

The Arrow House was about half an hour drive away from the rest of his family in Birmingham, and Tommy enjoyed the nature around him more than he enjoyed the busy street. Eleanor seemed to heal better surrounded by fresh air and nature too, she loved their garden and spent there the majority of her time.

His office was his favorite part, however, so as he sat in it one evening, surrounded by papers, presumably a tenth cigarette in his lips in the past hour, Eleanor walked in, wearing her pajamas already. She asked him to go to bed finally, but Tommy couldn't really abandon his work. He was stressed, incredibly, and it frustrated Eleanor to see him like that.

Tommy remembered Eleanor approaching his desk and snatching the cigarette out of his lip before taking his hand and making him stand. She wrapped her arms around him, warm and soft, and he remembered relaxing almost instantly. She stared into his eyes with those gorgeous hazels and smiled at him gently, making him forget everything he ever did before this moment. She just uttered the word yes, he could recall, and it confused him at first.
