it's the day before everybody at hogwarts leaves for the christmas break, adhara was sitting with regulus, preparing for what was coming when they got back home, and their brother and his friends were being dramatic at the gryffindor table, acting as if they were never going to see each other again.
adhara had hesitantly sent a letter to her parents a few days ago, hoping that they would let her stay at hogwarts for the holidays. ever since then, she'd regretted sending it - she didn't know what she was thinking; there was no way that they were letting her stay at hogwarts when she could be at home getting married.
today was sunday, which meant that the owls would bring back the presents and letters that people's family had sent them. adhara had her hopes up that she would receive a letter today saying that she could stay at hogwarts, or that she wasn't getting married anytime soon.
on another topic, since the fight, nobody had commented on the bruises and cuts littering regulus' and james' faces, and why adhara's skin had gotten much paler than before, they just assumed that regulus and james had both gotten hurt while playing quidditch, and that adhara just didn't go outside enough, which was the truth.
from the marauders' point of view, remus and peter had taken no notice on the bruises on the other black siblings faces. they didn't even need to ask for an explanation with james, he just told them that he hit on the wrong ginger, and it didn't end too well on his end.
"i'm going to go and sit at the gryffindor table; the owls will be back soon." adhara announced.
her brother nodded, "can i come with you? grace is still in the hospital ward. i don't want to be alone."
"is she still sick?"
regulus nodded again, as his sister agreed and began walking over to her house table.
once they got to the table, they sat in the only place available, other than next to the first years, opposite the marauders and next to the girls.
sirius shot a disgusted look at them once they sat down, "why are you sitting there?"
"because i'm a gryffindor."
"he isn't though. go sit at your own table." he shooed regulus away, "fag." he muttered to himself, which others heard but chose to ignore because of how tense the situation already was.
remus looked up from his chocolate spread toast and noticed the cuts and bruises, "woah, what happened to you?"
regulus looked down and scratched his nose, "uh, got into a bit of a rumble last week in quidditch training."
just as remus was about to make another comment, owls began flying into the hall, above all of the students, and dropped packages and letters to the recipients.
a red letter was dropped in front of adhara. as sirius saw the letter in front of his sister, all of his hatred, and anger turned into pity, and worry.
he knew exactly who it was from, but he wasn't sure why.
regulus saw his sister's glassy eyes, and the terrified look on her face. he looked down to see what she was looking at and saw the red envelope in her hands.
"is that..?"
"yeah.." she replied, before swallowing the lump in her throat.
all of the marauders turned their attention towards the girl, wondering whether she'd open it or not.
sirius decided to take away her choice.
he snatched the envelope out of her hand and ripped it up before either of his siblings could take it back.
"there. now you don't have to worry. she won't make the effort to send a second one. she'll just shout at you when we get home."
"great." she smiled, trying to hide her fear.

later on, in the gryffindor girls dormitory, adhara sat on her bed, reading a book which she had recieved from grace a few weeks previous, while the other girls were packing their suitcases for when they go home for the holidays.
"adhara?" lily spoke up.
since nobody ever spoke to the girl, she thought she'd just misheard the redhead, and decided to ignore it.
"adhara?" lily repeated
she ignored it again, assuming she was hearing things.
"adhara?!"
this time adhara looked up at the girl, while the other girls attention was also on the pair, "hm? were you talking to me?"
"yeah."
"oh, hi." adhara chuckled nervously.
"what happened to regulus?"
adhara froze for a slight second; did lily mean in general or with the cuts and bruises?
"what do you mean?"
"he got into a fight, right?"
"ha, oh, um- no he didn't. he got into a bit of a rumble at quidditch, that's all."
lily was slightly suspicious of the girl; how peculiar was it that both james and regulus both got bruises and cuts at the exact same time..
however, not wanting to upset adhara, or make her mad, lily decided to leave it as it was, especially since she barely even knew the girl.
"ok.. well, night."
"goodnight."
