CHAPTER 2
Tommy wakes up the next morning and the first thing he notices are the cramps. The second thing he notices is the lack of warmth on his lap. Peeking his eyes open he doesn't see the raccoon that made himself welcome on his lap. Instead he sees some berries next to his side.
The fuck?
He looks around but can't see far because of the thick undergrowth, he looks back at the small path he made to get to his current spot and doesn't see anything. He slowly stretches out his limbs to let his blood flow through him and starts to move up to stand. When he is finally up and standing he gets a proper look at his surroundings, tall trees not very close together but also not very far apart with so much undergrowth beneath where he is located. He looks back up kinda where he came from to get to where he is now and can still see a faint outline of a few buildings in the huge clearing. Finally stepping towards the clearing to get a better view he hears it. Very soft footsteps coming up towards his right. His eyes widen and his heartbeat quickens, all logic goes out the window and he runs towards the village. The villagers probably can't protect him if it's him but maybe he can hide out in the village, maybe in a basement where he can dig out a little space just for him or even just in the nearby scrap bin. Any kind of treatment from the villagers would be leagues better than the way Dream would treat him under any condition anyways.
Running as fast as his legs can take him, he probably looks like an absolute madman, he gets to the village and immediately dives into a wheat field that had a bright green bush border around for cover. He curls up into the bush and hugs himself tightly, breath coming in quick and his vision starts to go a little fuzzy. What the fuck, calm down you damn idiot. He cant feel any air go into his body and his vision won't work.
Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.
He starts chanting to himself in his head. He still can't seem to catch his breath and his vision is almost white when all of a sudden he feels a touch on his foot. He scrambles back and his eyes shoot forward. All he can see is a stick close to where his foot was.
"Hey, it's alright, it's okay." He hears a slightly deep voice say. 'Oh no' is all Tommy can think to himself and without meaning to his vision goes black.
When his vision is normal again it's significantly darker around him. It's not completely dark but it's close to it. He looks around him and sees that he is still in the bush. He rubs his hands over his arms to confirm that yes, he is real and not in some distant reality and lets go a shaky breath he didn't know he was holding onto. He looks forward and sees a stick tapping on the ground, his eyes get wide again and moves his head to try and see where the stick lead to but all he sees is more stick *sigh* he lets out a breath and starts to move himself when a hot pain shoots through his lower left side, he lets out a stifled cry and moves to feel what it is. All he feels is something poking out of his back and a wet patch around it. Oh great, just my luck.
"Hello?" He hears that voice again and stiffens, his head snaps towards the voice and the stick isn't moving.
"Hey if you want to come out now that would be pretty cool, you've been in there a long time but I didn't wanna move you on account of the whole panicking thing that was happening." The voice rambles on. "Should probably say again that my name is Dain."
"What do they mean again, they never told me their name in the damn first place." He thinks to himself, "I was talking earlier but I don't think you heard me. But hey if you come out I'll just be in the field working now, okay?" He hears some shuffling and he can hear the crunching of the dirt as he goes farther away.
After a few moments he can hear the steady hits of something hitting the ground. Assuming since he said field he is using a hoe. He decides to shift his body forward to get a closer look at the mess he got himself into. He looks out and just sees a golden view of tall wheat ready to be harvested. He's very relieved to not see the person who was talking at him and settles at the edge of the bush to try and see the surroundings better, on the very edge of his available view he can finally see the person, tall with black hair and in a white shirt and brown pants. They are using a hoe at the edge of the field like he heard and he frustratingly can't see what else. Past him he can see a simple house with a few small windows with planter boxes on them. A humble little abode if he does so himself.
He stays in his little spot until the famer finally gets done with what he is doing in his corner of the field and walks towards his home again. Tommy moves slightly back into the bush, again ignoring the pain, and keeps his eyes focused on him. He watches his disappear into his house and relaxes once again. Tommy is quite content just observing him for a while, enjoying not being bothered and being able to rest for a while, it's very nice.
It's practically dark again when the farmer again comes outside holding something he can't quite make out in the dark. He starts to bee line straight towards him and he flings himself back into the bush as fast and hard as he can which gives him a shooting pain up his back again. He again stifles another cry, and rearranges himself so there is no pressure on his wound and sees the stick, he grabs it, ready to defend himself if necessary.
"Hey little man, I brought you some food and some water. It's nothing special but if you're gonna make your little home in my bushes might as well give you a good neighborly welcome." He hears his voice come close to the bushes and some shuffling, "I'm just gonna set this down here in front of your little opening.... Hey.. I know we don't know each other, but if you need anything just knock on my door, okay?" He doesn't wait for an answer and hears him walk away from the bushes. He peeks out and sees the back of him moving back towards his house, he watches him walk all the way back into the house and the strange man does not once look back.
He rearranges himself again so he can be hugging himself, What the fuck just happened.. Tommy thinks to himself. Why is he being so nice for no reason. If anything, they should be trying to smoke him out of the bushes, dragging him out of here kicking and screaming. Why do they not just do it! Tommy sits there just rocking back and then he smells the food, Oh that smells so good. He thinks to himself and starts to inch out back towards his little entrance once again. He sees the food and its three pieces of bread, a piece of jerky, and an apple. He also see a water bladder. In what time period did i walk into? Tommy thinks of himself, he hasn't seen one in a long time and when he did see them they were from older people he met in past adventures. He takes the water first and inspects it, the outside of it is a brownish color from what he can tell with a small strip of leather that's supposed to attach to the body. He opens it and smells the water, it doesn't smell strange.. He takes an experimental sip and it's amazing, he hasn't had a good drink of water in a long time and this is possibly the best water he ever had. He chugs most of the water and feels relieved. He then starts to inspect the food. Nothing seems out of order, no strange smells or looks. He takes a bite of the bread first and its delectable in every way possible. He finishes the bread and puts the apple next to him for later and slowly picks at the jerky, it's again, perfect in every way. He doesn't really know if it truly is the best food ever or not but considering he hasn't had a proper meal in a very long time and is just very much starving but he is still willing to bet it is the best thing he has ever eaten anyways.
Maybe living in the bush with the stranger across the field will be okay for a little while. Maybe he can make this work.
