This chapter is told through Levi's point of view.

From a brothel.

To an underground slum.

To the underground city.

To the military on the surface.

To outside the walls.

How much further did he have to go?

Levi wondered, when he saw the vast horizon outside the walls. Farlan and Isabel dreamt of living up here. They had hoped for a better life, the freedom they didn't have underground. But he himself hadn't felt as excited. He had no problem returning to the underground.

Now both his comrades were gone, but he had to find Erwin Smith first. He couldn't return yet. Even though in fact, he could basically live anywhere as long as he felt 'at home'. For instance, his house in the underground mustn't be trespassed. Or his room in the barracks had to be squeakily clean. When he saw the squad leaders discussing about the route on their next expedition, he wondered, "how further do you have to go?"

.......

The soldiers all looked disheartened. They were cowering, trying to encourage each other. This wasn't bravery. He knew everyone secretly relied on Levi to save them. Such a pity. Now his home, this group of gloomy soldiers did not feel much like home.

Until he saw her. The soldier everyone called queer and scary. She was galloping on her horse near the gate with a wide smile, chuckling to herself. Her wide eyes behind the spectacles were sparkling. He did not even want to know what was in her head. Still, he stopped his horse next to hers, because he didn't want to be close to the others.

"Hey Levi, won't it be great if we meet a titan today?'' Hange greeted him. Her eyes seemed fearless. Truly fearless.

Levi had this impression that this person was remarkable, beautiful, but definitely weird.

But maybe being here isn't so bad . . .

Hange didn't have this pessimistic aura around her, and she also did not expect Levi to save her either. He liked that.

During the expedition, they were attacked by multiple titans, but the soldiers stayed true to Shadis's plan. However, something was wrong. Miche was sniffing the air, called for Erwin and pointed to the opposite direction. Erwin beckoned Levi and whispered "Go check out over there."

Levi obeyed, redirecting his horse to where Erwin was pointing. After a while, he found three soldiers being cornered by five titans. Shit I'm too late! Everyone's gonna get eaten!

He hooked his gear straight on one of the titans and started slicing off their ankles swiftly, one after the other. "Run!" he ordered the three soldiers who miraculously escaped just in time.

From the corner of his eye, he saw something dropped down from above, grabbed him right in the middle, and raced off. Just in time before something exploded right next to them.

Levi, still in that mysterious person's arms, craned his neck up and realized that it was Hange. She was shielding him with her body, her eyes fixed right at the curtain of smoke. They can barely see through the fumes, and the smell was making him dizzy.

"What's that?" Levi was still prepared to fight.

"It's the bomb I made!"

Levi was bewildered as to what this weapon was, and why the hell she was using it without permission.
