this is a joke i promise i dont actually think robespierre and king fucking louis ever dated lmao

The candlelight flickered, the flame dancing with the shadows on the wall as Maximilien brushed past, fiddling with the lock on the old, rotting door. It opened with a creak, he held back a wince, standing stock still for a moment and a beat, listening with bated breath for any footsteps nearing him.

No one came, and he slipped into the dim room.

"Robespierre," the old King was sat in the middle, faint moonlight shining through the bars of the window and illuminating his figure, "have you truly come to mock me? Scorn me, threaten me? Point out each and every flaw I've made during my rule," Louis spat, glaring at Maximilien from behind his hair.

"Rub it in, I know that it's the reason you're here." Maximilien sucked in a breath, pushing his glasses up on his head. He regretted his decision to forgo his powder, wearing it down and loose had seemed more discreet - people were less likely to pay attention to a messy peasant rather than a done-up lawyer.

He wanted to shake his head, tell Louis I have missed you and pretend as though his execution isn't looming over the two of them. "Do you think so little of me?" He said instead.

Louis scoffed, "Would it be so outrageous to say I do?"

Maximilien didn't reply, he closed the old door, fiddling with the keys in his pocket as he slid down the wall, pulling his knees up as he stared at the king. Look at me, it was on the tip of his tongue, and he was pleading with himself to just get it over with - he didn't want Louis dead, he didn't, he just wanted him here, with him. Please, please just look at me. "Your execution is in the morrow."

Louis didn't flinch, didn't look at him, "I am well aware of the fact, Robespierre." Maximilien bit his tongue, shifting his gaze to the barred off window. "Why are you here?"

I missed you. "Do you want me to leave?"

Louis shrugged, and Maximilien could feel the king's gaze levelled on him. He didn't move to meet his gaze, "Why are you being such a petulant brat?" Maximilien huffed out a laugh, running a hand down his face as a group of clouds moved to cover the moon.

"You're soon to die, Louis." He said again, staring at the king with half-lidded eyes as the exhaustion of the past few months finally seemed to catch up to him. "Is it so hard to believe that I have some sorrow for that?"

Louis didn't respond, he turned his head away from Maximilien.

"I am," Maximilien paused, swallowing around the lump in his throat as he eyes began to sting. Thousands of people had died due to Louis' neglect, it's retribution, his mind said, it's retribution, it's retribution. He stood, the keys clacking together and the moon dimming from behind the clouds. "If it's any consolation, I will miss you, Louis."

Louis didn't respond.

Maximilien left
