We run through the woods, racing towards the direction the crow is telling us to. Eventually, we stop running and start walking at a fast pace. I check on my companions and see that Zenitsu is out of breath. Surprisingly, I'm out of breath as well. We have been running for a solid ten minutes, however, I thought I would have more stamina than this.
" Hey, guys? On second thought, I'm not going to make it," Zenitsu pants.
Does this human ever stop talking?
" Even if I do make it there, I'll be useless!" he exclaims.
You could be used as bait actually. So you wouldn't be totally useless. I stare at Tanjiro and I notice how focused he is. Suddenly, a waft of scent flows over me. It's a strong scent, much stronger than the scent I smelt when I met Tanjiro. However, we are much farther away, so what's going on?
" Tanjiro," I begin, " this scent is stronger than the one from the demon I killed, but there's more distance between us and this one."
He nods and we keep walking, faster now. Eventually, I spot a mansion in a clearing up ahead. As we walk into the sun, Tanjiro inspects the house.
" I smell blood," he declares.
I can smell it too.
" But there's something else here too...something that I've never smelt before."
" I don't know about that, but I can hear something. Do you?" Zenitsu pipes up.
" No, I can't hear a thing. Aku? What about the scent you mentioned earlier?"
I take a deep breath.
" Definitely coming from here," I answer.
There's also the scent of fear and the sweet scent small humans give off. I turn to our left and spot a young boy wearing a cyan kimono and a younger girl wearing pink. I point towards the children and Tanjiro follows my directions. The children gasp in fear and whimper.
" K-kids," Zenitsu shivers.
Tanjiro stares blankly.
" I wonder what's wrong."
He approaches the kids as if they're normal children roaming the streets of their village.
" Hey, what are you two doing here?" he asks.
The kids shrink away, eyes wide in terror. Tanjiro kneels down.
" Hey? wanna see something cool?" he asks, " ta-daa!"
He pulls out the sparrow from earlier.
" I pulled this sparrow out from thin air! Isn't it cute?"
Sorry Tanjiro, but these humans are terrified. I don't think a simple sparrow could cheer them up.
