The next morning AJ was rudely awoken by Thomas yelling at a crow. Sighing, she rolled over to face Leo who had also just woken up. "Morning" She mumbled to the boy who just groaned in response. The hard ground wasn't exactly the most comfortable place to sleep and had made Leo quite cranky, not to mention he was not a morning person.
AJ could remember mornings in the Sanct where she would have to flip his hammock upside down to wake him up and get him going for the day. She couldn't help but chuckle at the memory as she sat up, looking around getting a rude reminder of her situation. Those creatures and their roars were in the front of her brain.
As if Newt was thinking the same thing he spoke up to Thomas who had stood up, "Are they gone?"
"Yeah, I think we're safe now," Thomas replied, walking over to AJ who extended her hands out for him to pull her up from her seated position. "Okay, we should get moving."
"Let's pack it up" Thomas continued, grabbing his backpack that sat beside Teresa who was wiping her face, in an attempt to wipe the sleepiness off with it.
"Aris, come on." At the mention of his name, Aris tiredly sat up, eyes barely open.
"Leo, Fry, Winston, let's go." Frypan lazily stood up and stretched before helping Leo up who then took his turn to stretch. Winston still lay on the ground, unable to get up.
"Shit" AJ muttered, approaching the injured boy. "May I?" She asked him, gesturing to his shirt. Winston nodded, making AJ lift the material to see the scratches that ran down his abdomen. "Don't worry" She muttered, looking down at the boy who just groaned in pain. Reaching into her backpack, she grabbed her water bottle and placed it beside her. Then she reached down to the bottom of her shirt and ripped off some fabric.
"You don't have to-" Winston started before being shushed by the girl who was drenching the fabric in water.
"This might hurt, but we need to clean the cut."
Winston nodded, closing his eyes as the girl lightly dabbed and cleaned the boy's wounds. "Leo, come make sure I've done this right!" AJ called out to her best friend. Leo had many jobs in the Sanctuary and was good at every one of them so AJ constantly sought his approval on projects she did, cleaning Winston's wounds was no different.
Leo quickly jogged over and squatted beside the pair. He took a moment to examine the cut before patting AJ's shoulder, "All good" He muttered. Winston then opened his eyes to thank the girl, before Frypan reached down to help him up.
AJ stood back up and positioned herself at the back of the group with Frypan and Aris, not noticing the glances Minho kept sending her way. The group clambered over the piles of rubble with Thomas leading the way as usual.
Pausing on top of the hill, the group all took a moment to gaze upon the abandoned city they found themselves in. Dilapidated buildings surrounding them, AJ whispered to Frypan, "Are all cities like this?" The boy shook his head before responding, "Shuck, I hope not."
The group were now walking at a steady pace on a dirt road, silence wrapping around them. No one felt the need to talk, even though there was so much to talk about. AJ let her mind wander, thinking back to the events of the previous night. What were those things? How did they come to be? Questions like these riddled her thoughts before her gaze slowly drifted toward Minho. Soft, funny, cute Minho. God, how had she let herself fall for him so quickly?
Her thoughts were then interrupted when Frypan spoke up.
"What the hell happened to this place?"
"I don't know" Newt responded, staggering behind the boy, a limp in step was very evident. "It doesn't look like anyone's been here in a long time."
