13 years ago:

"you sure train a lot, green head." m/n said, swinging his feet back and forth up from the branch he was sitting on, lifting his thumb to push up an oversized pirate hat.

zoro had his feet on two separate rocks, a rope between his teeth as he continued to lift a weight up with his mouth.

"shut up, you shouldn't be talking if you never train."

m/n narrowed his eyes at the green haired male, his heart skipped a beat at those words. no one has ever talked to him like that. everyone was always in fear from a single step from m/n.

"i don't need to train out in the open, besides, i'm already stronger."

zoro dropped the rope from his mouth, turning and glaring at the shirtless boy wearing a slightly too big pirate hat on the branch. a book in his hands.

"if you're so 'strong' why don't you prove it!"

m/n blinked, taking his hat off and hanging it on the branch, closing his book and balancing it on the branch before jumping off of it and walking to the male.

"if you want to lose against someone new, by all means fight me." he taunted, "you won't amount to me."

zoro only heard his taunting voice. not a hint that this mysterious male had been watching him for a bit, that he wasn't just on that same tree branch he always was when zoro trained.

zoro looked up at him, "what did you just say?! i'll become the strongest swordsman, just you wait!"

"a sucky dream, if you ask me."

"good thing i wasn't asking!" zoro ran at him, going to punch the male who's been watching him for a bit.

m/n grabbed his fist, using his free hand to push zoro's elbow up a little. not enough for a fracture or a break, enough to show that he wasn't strong enough to fight him. zoro clenched his teeth, using his foot to kick underneath m/n's legs.

m/n fell on his back, and let a grunt out. zoro went to punch his face since he was down, m/n once more grabbed it, turning a bit as he punched zoro's cheek.

"are you that incapable of using other moves?" m/n asked, getting up and dusting himself off.

"who do you think you are?!" zoro snapped.

m/n continued to block each punch or kick the green haired male threw at him. every step m/n took back was another step zoro took forward. the one sided fight was stepped into the dojo zoro has been training under. m/n grabbed two wooden swords as zoro grabbed three.

"have you mastered three swords style?" m/n asked, pulling his hand forward as zoro blocked it.

"almost." zoro said, it being muffled as there was a wooden sword in his mouth.

"don't get a splinter when i kick your ass."

"kick my ass?! i'll make sure you eat your words."

zoro launched himself and spun at m/n, causing the said male to do a back handspring away from the three swords coming at him. once he landed on his feet, he side flipped in the air as he saw a wooden sword being directly pointed to his chest. he landed behind zoro.

he kicked the back of zoro's legs, causing the green haired male to land on his knees. zoro gripped tighter on his swords, spinning to attack but he froze. one of m/n's swords was pointed directly in front of zoro's eyes as the other sword he was holding went under his chin. going horizontally on his neck.

a blank gaze was what zoro was looking at, his mouth dropped open as the sword fell out and landed on the floor. his eyes wide.

"wow, keep it up and you just might be the greatest swordsmen." m/n said.

zoro thought he was being made fun of once more, so he pushed the wooden swords that were pointed at him away. a surprise expression overcame m/n's face as he dropped the swords. zoro had tackled him to the ground, digging his nails into m/n's shoulders since he had nothing to hold onto.

m/n bit his tongue to suppress the wince that was at the back of his throat.

"are you making fun of me?!" zoro huffed, "i'll prove it! i'll show you!"

m/n's eyes widened a bit, he had never fought someone with this determination. never fought someone who was actually a challenge. so, m/n laughed. and he didn't stop laughing.

zoro narrowed his eyes at the male under him. hating the fact that this shirtless boy was laughing at him.

"whatever you're thinking, you're wrong." m/n said, "you're different green hair. i've never had someone fight me with strength like that." his eyes sparkled at a worthy opponent, "i would love to continue to fight. be your sparring partner."

zoro blinked at him, slowly getting off of him. he sat on the ground, processing what he had just said.

"i don't even know who you are." he snapped, "why would i want to?!"

m/n sat up, chuckling behind his hand. he felt amused. no one has ever talked back, no one has ever fought back. maybe, just maybe zoro didn't know who he was. didn't know who his father was. so he smiled.

"i'm m/n, and i'm going to be a great pirate! i'll prove to people i'm strong, i'll prove to my dad that his swordsmanship won't go to waste from what he taught me."

zoro tilted his head, he smiled. a tiny one that m/n caught a glimpse of. which made m/n smile, once more his heart skipped a beat.

"i'm roronoa zoro," he said, "why are you shirtless?"

m/n pulled his head back, taken back by the question. this was the first time someone has asked him a weird question. first time someone has even asked a question.

"i wanted to follow in my dads footsteps. but i never got a coat like he did, he left for the sea." m/n sadly smiled, lying right through his teeth, "so i've been on my own for awhile. but he taught me everything i know!"

"are you ever cold?" he asked.

m/n quickly nodded his head, "but i don't have any money to afford something warm. i mostly sleep in trees." he had no clue as to why he was over sharing. but this was the first time someone has ever acknowledged him other than fear, will we be friends? i hope so. "do you want to be friends?!" i've never had friends. well besides those twins, but they left, but i wouldn't consider them friends, yet.

zoro looked at him wearily, but nodded his head, "i do."

m/n opened his eyes. his hammock swaying as he slowly sat up. he washed up for the day and put his coat on and his hat, tadeo flying on his shoulder. he grabbed his angel blades from the wall, putting them in their holster. he turned and walked to his door, he pushed the doors open, greeted by the sun.

he looked at his crew, all up and laughing. hīrā and jairo were as close as they always were. haru walked up to their captain, following his line of sight. laughing a bit.

"my sister sure knows how to pick them." haru said.

m/n nodded, agreeing with him.

but his mind was focused on something else, he hadn't slept that well in months.

~should i post weekly instead of biweekly? i mean, this entire story is completed in my drafts and it's a bit long. what do you guys think?
