Asher's POV

I woke up to the sound of voices, a fight is what it sounded like. My eyebrows scrunched curiously as I rubbed my black eyes sleepily. I could feel my bat ears twitching, listening closely, so I uncovered them more from underneath my hat. My messy black hair was sticking straight up and I ran my hands through it to try and tame it. It didn't sound like any normal fight here in the City of the Dead.

"You guys hear that too?" I turned over inside my cage, peering through the small crack at my friends. Everyone was awake and listening intently as well, except for 4-year-old Pip who was asleep in his cage, His white-blond hair falling just above his eyes.

"Asher, I think Dad's in trouble," Tiny, 8-year-old Melody whispered in terror, her dark blue eyes wide with fear. She anxiously tugged on her blackish-blue pigtails, her bluish-tinted hands whittling back and forth. Her knees were curled up to her chest, she leaned against the cage wall closest to me, shaking. "He left a while ago and he hasn't come back."

"It must have something to do with those new hybrids he was talking about," Dusk added softly as she brushed her black, shoulder-length hair out of her face. She was a human-lupine hybrid, meaning she could morph into a ferocious wolf whenever she wanted. But most of the time she just stayed as she was, a moody 12-year-old. She folded her arms and continued staring out the window.

"No way, he wouldn't replace us, right?" Kai worried aloud. His dark hands ran back and forth through his even darker hair. His bright green owl eyes looked out the window in fear and his tawny wings flapped anxiously.

Serenity, in the cage across from me, winced and wrapped her colorful parrot wings around her body. She hated fighting, and everyone was on edge now that we knew our Dad was involved in one. Our dad's name was Tanning, he created us. He protects us from the chaotic City of the Dead, where hybrid experiments like us aren't safe. But now he's the one who's not safe.

"Can you still see him? Is he ok?" I asked Dusk. She turned back towards the window and her dark brown eyes narrowed.

"Yeah, but there's two people with him," She started slowly. "One's.. Blue."

"Like me?!" Melody grinned, looking at her bluish skin. We're pretty sure she had been experimented on with some kind of metal, hence her blue skin. Tanning says she's supposed to be able to conduct electricity, but she isn't old enough yet. She smiled wide at Dusk with curiosity.

"Shh!" Dusk snapped. "There's another person there too, a girl with wings."

"Like us?!" Kai, Serenity, and I exclaimed excitedly.

"What part of shush don't you understand?!" Dusk growled, which woke up little Pip from his nap.

His big blue eyes blinked sleepily and looked curiously at us. There was something different about him, I couldn't quite comprehend. Pip hadn't lived in Tanning's lab as long as us, but we think his brain was experimented on. Like he has some sort of special, superhero mind. I still don't completely trust him, despite his cute, innocent looks.

Pip looked out the window at the fighting and began crying. His loud wails filled the room and we all groaned. Pretty soon everyone was talking, some trying to calm him down, others trying to see outside. The noise was loud, but one sound rose above all others causing us to fall silent. A voice, the girl with wings saying something to Dad. Something that would haunt me forever.

"I want you to die right now."
