The first thing they needed to do, of course, was fix a barrier around them to prevent the entity from taking either of them as they plotted to save the others. This was done very quickly; Legalist had always been the one with the battle prowess and the training, out of the two of them. As such, he also specialized in barrier spells. And with the safety precautions in place, they could freely discuss.

There was a small problem which bore through their ideas: they had to be very secretive about their plans. Luckily for them, they already had a method to prevent Illegalist from finding out, should he ever by chance break through to them. And what was their solution? Nothing other than writing in a special musical code, of course—a code only decipherable by those who were taught by Lord Legalist and Lady Aileana themselves.

What course of action do you think is best, Le? Said Lady Aileana.

She could almost hear the smirk through the reply. Easy. We go to the arts-and-crafts store.

Aileana rolled her eyes affectionately. I thought you'd say that.

Arts-and-crafts, of course, could only allude to the formulation of a certain powerful spell from the handbook, capable of accurately pinpointing anything descended from the dark energy of Sacrilege. It was an ability which Lord Doug naturally carried, but alas, the rest needed this wondrous, wondrous spell.

The BobaForte Accelerando.

And with the first casting of the spell, Legalist ended up accidentally setting the testing room on fire. He barely escaped with a smoldering hat.

"What happened?" Aileana asked.

Legalist shrugged, wiping the soot from his face. "It was more explosive than I previously bargained for."

It was not particularly difficult to cast for them, they discovered, but it did cost the duo their energy greatly. This sacrifice they were willing to make. The more powerful the spell, the greater chance of knowing Illegalist's presence and arming themselves with the rest of the spells. And many did they learn: blocking his attacks, creating shields, reflecting his power, seizing their own control. And by the end of a few days of burning the laboratory and devastating the library, they deemed themselves to be in... roughly good shape to track down this magic.
