I stare at the torn letter in my hands. My face must look puzzled, because Droid comes up.
"You got the letter today, mon?" he says excitedly. "Oh, oh, oh, can I read it? Please, mon?"
I shake my head and swim down to the depths of the ocean, deeper than my cave, deeper than the sea dragons. I have to get to the Library.
The Library is an agate building at the bottom of the sea. It contains many stone runes in alphabetical order. I find the one labeled 'Dragons.'
"The three dragons are the Ice Dragon, Crystal; Fire Dragon, Smoke; and the Metal Dragon, Spike. Crystal can shoot ice from her mouth and it will automatically freeze anything it touches. Smoke can breathe fire, which will melt Crystal's ice but also leave you with many scorching burns that will last forever. Spike is the only dragon out of the three that has armor." I read, my eyes scanning the tiny script. "Darius is a mischievous ghost that likes to keep you away from them. There is also a fourth dragon, Clay. He is an Earth Dragon and guards the Pearl, an egg that will heal even the greatest of injuries and cure even the deadliest of sicknesses. The Pearl will also erase memory if it is used incorrectly, and it has the ability to conjure ripe fruits and vegetables out of barren ground. Clay can create Golems, but only ones that have wooden armor, sticks for swords, and stone boots."
I stare at the walls of the Library. After a minute, I blink and swim up to the glimmering blue surface. There is a boy standing there.
"Hello." he says. "I am Tock, a vampire, and this is my......brother, Tick. He is a zombie."
Tock has on a one-piece black suit and a red tie. His face is pale and his black hair is slicked back. Tick has on raggedy brown pants and a white torn shirt. His light green-tinted face is dotted with scars, and his brown dirty hair stuck up all over the place.
I am a little suspicious about Tick and Tock. They seem like opposites. Tock was an angel, and the devil was, of course, Tick. I frown at them until a tall man hobbles up behind Tock. His face was embellished with age lines and spots. His hands seemed weathered and tough. The effort of walking seemed to have taken a toll on his body.
"I am Master Time." he grunts. It was hard to hear him, because his voice was no more than a whisper. "I am a Time Bearer, which is an ancient culture of people that live for five-hundred years and then die. This is my five-hundred and first."
Master Time sighs as he lies down on one of the seaweed-covered rocks. "My body is ancient, and I must choose one person to take my place." he whispers, breathing ragged. "Tock seems like the obvious choice, being so......." Master Time stops to gasp for breath. "...precise and definite. But Tick...." he pauses again, this time closing his eyes. "...is loyal and smart. Tick, I choose you...."
Master Time stops breathing. Tick's eyes fill with tears as he hugs his beloved master. I look at Tock, smiling.
"Let's return to my house to find...something."
Tock nods and jumps into the ocean with me. His face stays pale for a surprisingly long time before turning red, blue, and finally purple. I try to think of a way to give him air without going up to the surface... I know!
I put my lips up against his and breathe. Tock's face relaxes and he stares at me. When we get to my house, I give him a sea-glass helmet to keep in air, then we step into my living room. He sits in a chair and waits. "Wha-?" he gasps as I take off his helmet and kiss him, full on the lips. At first, he looks surprised, but finally he smiles.
After a while, we stop and he stares at me. His pale face is smiling.
