Y/F/S/S: your favourite romantic/slow song

The sun was still high in the sky when Matthew turned into the parking lot. It was a couple of minutes after five in the afternoon on a Friday late in September and for once the weatherman had been right when he had declared it to be a "scorcher". It was humid and sticky in the Nevadan heat causing the bare skin of his legs to stick to the leather seats where his long board shorts had ridden up. Even riding with the windows and the top down had given him little relief from the heat. As he pulled up to the main entrance he grinned. His girlfriend of two years, Y/N, was already sitting on a low partition wall waiting for him, distracted by the screen of her phone. Sensing that someone was near, she looked up and gave him a small smile. Sliding her phone into the pocket of the jean shorts she had not long changed into in order to combat the heat, she bounded over to his car and got in. He leaned across and stole a kiss from her.

"Hi honey. Ready for dinner?"

She nodded at him, dropping her bag down into the foothold and fishing out a pair of sunglasses from it. They chatted easily, telling stories from throughout their day – hers centring around the on goings at the advertising firm she worked at and his around one of his table reads for an upcoming episode of Criminal Minds.

They continued talking passionately about their ventures throughout their meal, both thoroughly content on listening to the other and taking the time to just be with each other in the informal dining space. Whilst dressing up for dinner was fun for them, they much preferred getting take-out in their sweats and eating at home so had compromised and gone to a café-come-restaurant where their attire of shorts and t-shirts wouldn't look out of place among the local residents and tourists. The pair took solace in ducking behind their menus to talk as though they were trying to keep themselves hidden from the world. The only minor interruptions came from their designated server peeling back their private rose-tinted cover as she made sure they were comfortable, the rest of the room drowned out by their only concern being for the other.

They had not long finished dinner when Matthew had caught her off guard with talk of a surprise outing that he had planned on taking her on that night. After settling the bill he had led her back out to the car, stopping only to open the door for her. Even though they had been together over two years and she was more than capable of opening doors for herself, he still liked to be a gentleman and do those little things for her that proved that they were very much still for keeps.

Time seemed to pass by slowly, the only sounds around them emitting from the gentle hum of the engine and the latest chart-topper on the radio. These sounds were only interrupted by the occasional contented sigh and the over-the-end-of-the-track mumblings of the DJ announcing the next song. Y/N fanned herself with a discarded piece of paper. The top of the car had been put back on whilst they had been inside the restaurant and despite the windows being all the way down the air was still hot and hung close, the space for the air to filter through from where the glass used to be providing little to no relief in the height of the Nevadan summer. Noticing her discomfort Matthew pressed a button and a stream of slightly cooler air swam over them. The silence between them was comfortable, the air of the surprise whisking-away hanging over them and creating a buzz of excitement. She still had no idea where he was taking her, the only indication of the distance being that of the miles traveled registering on the speedometer. Before long the joyous chirping of the regional radio station changed to that of another. She shifted in her seat to look at the tall, brooding man navigating the way. A small smile played on his face, growing wider when he felt her looking at him. He glanced at her, reaching out his hand to squeeze her knee before placing it back on the wheel. He took looking after her seriously – something which she was entirely grateful for – and was always on hand with a plan to take her stresses away even when she herself did not know that she was stressed. She knew asking him where they were going would prove to be futile; that he would remain tight-lipped no matter how much she goaded him into revealing their destination to her. Keeping secrets was one of his strengths and whilst it was one of the many qualities that she admired about him, it was times like this when she wished that he was willing to divulge information.

The day continued to fade around them, the coolness of the night welcoming them with open arms. The car no longer seems stuffy, the light beading of their sweat evaporating. They had driven so far that only static was available on the radio, lulling Y/N to sleep. The concrete roads had now turned to dirt, sending fine Nevadan dust flying as the wheels. Sensing that their drive was winding down as Matthew took a turn off the out-of-way road, Y/N woke up and stretched in the limited space that she had in the front passenger seat. She cupped her hands around her face as she pressed it up against the now-rolled up glass pane. The car started to incline as Matthew started to drive uphill and Y/N noticed the area around them had gone from the suburban outskirts of the city to the desert-like hills surrounding it. They were creeping higher and higher, way above the city skyline. The road continued upwards through a nestle of trees, resembling more of a forgotten path as the dirt and dust grew thicker.

The car soon came to a stop and a look of confusion swept over her face. There was nothing up here bar a look out point. She hadn't noticed that Matthew had vacated the car until he was standing on the other side of her door tugging it open for her. He extended his right hand out to her and she took it letting him help her out. As the door closed over, Y/N peered out into the night. There was nothing for miles until her eyes fell on the city below. Fireflies and the dull beam of the headlights were their only sources of light as he pulled her towards the front of the car. A sense of calmness came over them. Whilst the hilltop was derelict she still felt entirely safe in his company. There was no need to fear anything when the other was near. It was peaceful up there in the throng of trees, undisturbed by the bustle of the city life swarming underneath them.

Y/N shivered against the dimly lit backdrop, her vest top and shorts no longer keeping her warm. She rubbed her arms to try to muster up some warmth, the cool air proving to be no match for her. Matthew noticed and made his way back to the car. From the front seat he reached into the back and pulled out the blanket that he always kept for emergencies. Upon getting back out Matthew switched on the car's sound system and navigated to the aux cord option to which he had plugged in his iPod. As he turned it up, the familiar notes of their song flowed out through the open door. He could see Y/N standing before him in the soft glow of the headlights. Even though she was partially turned to the view before her he could still make out her features, her face lighting up as she recognised the song. She smiled at him as he walked back over and took her hand, twirling her under his arm to the music. She started to giggle and then he did too: her laughter was infectious as when they had first met. When he finally stopped he wrapped the blanket around her and pulled her to him. They started to sway to the music, the romantic tones of "Y/F/S/S" providing the perfect soundtrack to their love story.

They stood upon that hillside for hours, swaying to the same love songs on repeat from the playlist Matthew had made in a bid to be romantic the previous Valentine's Day, both just lost in each other's gaze. Y/N rested her head against Matthew's chest, the soothing beat of his heart making her feel at home even in the middle of nowhere. He was home to her and there was nowhere else she'd rather be, fully content with the idea of living in that moment for the rest of their lives if he so desired.
