Completely spaced and forgot yesterday was Monday. This is my last update for a while. My mum's funeral is tomorrow and I'm just not in the right frame of mind to be doing anything writing-related. I'll be back at some point, I just don't know when. In the meantime: if you could like these stories, share them and check out my others it would be greatly appreciated.

Rooftops

Cast:

Y/N = your name

Y/B/F = your best friend (female)

Apologies in advance for any swearing and the hilariously bad nicknames you're about to witness.

Tuesday evenings: almost as boring as Monday mornings. Work always seems to drag on and when you do get home there's never anything good on TV. That was why Y/N was glad that on this particular Tuesday evening she had a date to the movies with two of her best friends and some of the cast members of Criminal Minds that she had met through one of them, along with their various partners and dates. She was also grateful that she had the next day off as the group had unanimously decided to see a movie at the latest time possible; 11pm to accommodate Matthew's "sleep all day and party all night" mantra - much to her disdain. She sat in between her two best friends, Y/B/F and Matthew, and spent most of the movie throwing popcorn at the pair before falling asleep in her seat, unaware of even the title of the movie she was supposed to be watching.

At around 1am the group emerged from the cinema, the women bleary eyed and most of the men highly-wired, looking for the next event of the night. Some of the crew packed themselves into a van along with Shemar, fully intent on finding the nearest nightclub. Y/B/F, AJ and her husband whom she could never remember the name of but found to be a sweetheart, piled into AJ's car and headed off to wherever they were heading after hugging her goodbye. Y/N looked at Matthew. He was her ride home.

"Ready to go?" He asked as they walked in the general direction of his car.

She nodded and her eyes grew wide as she had a sudden thought. "Erm... Matthew?"

He stopped walking when he found she had also done so. "Yeah?"

"I've forgotten my keys and my roommates are out."

"Oh." He took a breath in through his nose, raising his head as the air filled his lungs. "Just call them and let them know you're crashing at mine tonight then."

She nodded again. To be honest; she always preferred to stay at his apartment. They would share a bed as they talked about where they saw themselves in five years and he would lend her a t-shirt and sweats to sleep in.

She gave him a sheepish look.

Matthew gave her a look. "You've forgotten your phone as well, haven't you?"

She half grinned at him and slightly shrugged. "Maybe..."

He snorted as he gave a light laugh and pulled out his phone from his jean pocket. He unlocked the screen and handed it to her.

"Thanks, Nut Sack." She winked at him, turning her attention to dialing one of her roommate's numbers.

"No problem, Gooch." He joked back.

She pressed the call button and waited for someone to pick up on the other end. When the call rang out, she left a voicemail and hung up before reaching over to Matthew and sliding his phone back in his pocket.

"Come on, then, Fruit Loop." He grabbed her hand and pulled her behind him as he ran to his car. He laughed as she giggled when she struggled to keep up with him, tripping a few times but never falling as he held her firmly upright by the hand. In true Matthew fashion he opened the front passenger door for her and jokingly tried to push her into the car, causing her to laugh even more. He shut the door shut as soon as she had all of her limbs securely inside the vehicle and walked around to the driver's side, getting in and driving off.

Matthew parked safely outside his apartment complex and they both got out, Matthew taking the time to lock the doors before leading her to the entrance. He used his key fob to let them in and held open the door for her, allowing it to slam shut once he had passed through the doorway. He grabbed her by the wrist this time and pulled her along as he walked up the three flights of stairs to his home. He kept going up the stairs however, passing his front door.

Y/N tugged him back, stopping mid-stride on the fourth set of stairs. "Didn't we just pass your place?"

"Yeah, but I want to show you something." Without letting her get another word in, he continued pulling her up the stairs before they came to a heavier-built fire door with a press-to-release bar across it. Y/N realised that it led out onto the roof; a place where Matthew had hosted many a party. Matthew pushed the bar down, opening the door. Once he and Y/N were on the other side he secured the door to the wall behind it via a clip on a chain and a hook that had been screwed into the wall to keep it propped open. There was a slight chill in the midsummer night air. He led her over to a square block of cement piled about a foot high and was about five feet in both width and length.

"So what did you want to show me?"

He motioned for her to sit down and she did so.

He took a seat beside her, gesturing towards the sky. "The sunrise."

"But it's not even 2AM. The sun won't be up for at least another three hours."

He grinned at her. "Then you'll just have to stay here with me until then."

A comfortable silence came over them as they looked out into the crisp navy-blue heavens just taking in their surroundings and allowing their eyes to adjust to the dim light provided by a couple of solar lanterns attached around the inner perimeter of the wall encasing the rooftop.

They soon fell into their usual topics of discussion; space and time inspired by their location and random, giggle-filled conversations encouraged by their lack of sleep and general loopy-ness. There came a time when, even in the height of summer, the air turned colder and Y/N began to shiver. Matthew unzipped his hoodie and placed it around her shoulders. Y/N smiled at him gratefully and slipped her arms through the armholes, zipping it up and pulling the fabric over her hands. She sighed happily as his familiar scent lightly tickled her nostrils. It was comforting.

She nudged his shoulder with her own. "It's beautiful up here. Thanks for sharing this with me."

"Well, Gooch, I wanted to bring you up here so that you would remember the moment."

Her brow crinkled. "What moment?"

He visibly gulped. "The moment I told you that I've been in love with you for a few years now."

Her eyes widened. She had had no idea that this is where the night had been heading.

Matthew looked to the small space between them. Y/N noticed and shuffled closer to him. He looked up to meet her eyes. They leaned towards each other, tilting their heads to their right. Y/N put her hoody-clad hands on his face as their lips met.

"I love you too, Nut Sack."
