I stared in bewilderment at the camp.
The black tom, Croweye, was also the deputy and my mentor. There are other clans too. Breezeclan and Rippleclan.I stared at a white tom.
"Who's he?"I asked Croweye.
"That is Whitestorm. One of our senior warriors. Very trusted and wise."Croweye replied.
"Croweye!"Airstar called as he came stumbling over. His fur was black and white and he had kind blue eyes.
"I want you to lead a border patrol with
Duskfur and Blazefur. Take Skypaw with you."Airstar ordered.
Croweye dipped his head and gestured with his tail for me to follow him.
Croweye called over to a red tabby tom and a brown tabby she-cat.
"Blazefur, Duskfur. Border patrol."Croweye meowed curtly.I hurried to catch up with the group as they headed out of the camp.
Surrounding the camp were thick trees with big branches an huge leaves.
I gazed up at them in wonder.
"Skypaw!"Croweye snapped.
I felt my cheeks flush hot with embarrassment. I had only just got to know Croweye when he was all deputy like.I wriggled through a gap in the trees and pushed through the tall grass.
I kept my eye on Blazefur's red tail.
The tree's thinned and the gras shortened and we came to a flowing stream. A few stones were littered across the water.Croweye easily hopped over the stones.
The water gurgled around them.
My legs were slightly itchy from where the long grass had rubbed against them. Now cool short grass brushed against my paws.
Duskfur nudged my shoulder.
"Come on Skypaw." She encouraged.
"She really did bang her head."Duskfur added quietly to herself.I frowned. I needed to prove myself.
I bounded across the stones, not even thinking about where I placed my paws. I grinned at Croweye. Duskfur have me an approving look.As we headed through the territory a few memories filtered through my head. I remembered being here before.
I was scared. It was my first day as an apprentice and Croweye seemed really tough. I frowned. How come I didn't remember that sooner? Does that mean I dreamt being a human? No! Impossible!I stopped short when stale scent markers hit my nose.
"Rippleclan border."Blazefur murmured to me. He nodded across the invisible line.It was like a swamp! A huge river flowed a few feet from the border and one giant willow stood out several fox lengths away. Fox lengths? Since when did I say that?
"That's their camp."Croweye nodded to the willow.
"Rippleclan are obnoxious, arrogant but also responsible and cunning."Croweye added.
I winkled up my nose when yucky fish scented air reached me."Gross!"I spat.
"Tell me about it!"Duskfur chuckled.
"Stinking fish-monsters."Blazefur laughed.
"Come on now! Are you going to show Skypaw how to mark the borders or how to be assigned to clean out the elder's bedding!"Croweye threatened.
Blazefur looked ashamed as he stared at the ground while Duskfur the older she-cat grinned.Croweye sniffed at a clump of messy grass by the border. He expertly marked it. He nodded to me to do the same. I found a small bush with red berries on it.
"Be careful Skypaw. Those are death berries."Croweye warned me when I leaned in to sniff the berries. I immediately jumped back.
I glanced at Croweye who gave me an encouraging nod. I nodded back and carefully marked the bush."Very good Skypaw. Let's keep moving."Croweye, Blazefur and Duskfur began marking the borders.
I cautiously did the same.
