Chapter eight: Injury

Mara's pov:

"FUCK!!" Was all I had time to shout in the split second before I slammed straight into the massive oak-tree's branch.

Omni Directional Manoeuvre Gear, what a load of shit.

It wasn't like this was my first time using it either. In fact, we'd been using the ODM gear since the fourth month of training, and it was currently one of the last for this training year.

But we all slipped up sometimes. It just so happened that I was having an unlucky day today. I'd hit my head on my bed frame this morning. I'd accidentally cut my shin while shaving my legs earlier. Not fun. The cut still really stung.

But none of that was anything compared to this. I felt the cracking in my stomach, most likely my ribs, when I collided with the branch. The air was ripped from my lungs, and I cried out at the sudden pain.

I fell, but thankfully the hooks in my gear were still embedded in another tree, so instead of dying from the fall, I just slammed into the other tree. I quickly released my hooks and lowered myself to the ground before all the pain had time to register.

I leaned against the tree and panted for breath, teeth grit and eyes watering, dangerously close to crying. I lifted my shirt, I knew there would be a massive bruise on my stomach from the pain there, a broken rib or two, maybe more. My thoughts were only confirmed by the already massive, forming purple bruise.

This wasn't going to end well at all.

I knew I'd get yelled at by Shadis if I didn't complete the exercise, but I'd also damage my already badly injured body more. I weighed up the pros and cons. Not get yelled at by Shadis but put myself through a whole lot of pain, or get yelled at and probably lose a whole bunch of privileges but suffer less pain.

Fuck, there was no obvious answer to my dilema.

I heard the familiar sound of ODM gear whizzing nearby. Then a small gasp and running footsteps.

"Mara! Are you ok?!" A familiar voice exclaimed. I looked up, wincing with the effort of the movement, and met the panicked eyes of Krista. I licked my lips and tried to nod, but it only resulted in severe pain.

Yup, definitely more than just two ribs broken.

The sound of more ODM gear zipping by.

"Ymir! Help me with Mara, she's badly injured!" Krista exclaimed. Footsteps approached, I looked up and met the dark eyes of Ymir. She took in the scene, then sighed. She hurried over and knelt before me.
