Chapter thirteen: Sneak

Mara's pov:

That day had come around once more. The second anniversary of the fall of Wall Maria. Exactly two years had passed now, but the time didn't dull the pain the memories brought with them.

Shadis still made us do training, annoyingly. Training had ended a few hours ago though, so here I lay next to Armin and Yana on her bed in her room.

Armin read Yana a book while I lay, staring blankly at the bunk above. My eyelids drooped from exhaustion, I had been up all night last night.

I sighed and shifted so my head was resting on Armin's stomach while Yana's head rested on my own. I played with Yana's now waist-length brunette hair, plaiting and unplaiting random strands while I listened to Armin's soothing voice explain how the character in the story saved herself from the brink of death. It was a good story too, very detailed and descriptive.

I reached up and began plaiting Armin's hair, he laughed quietly when I got annoyed that it wasn't quite long enough.

After another half hour, Armin finished the book, so I had to get up and let him find another. I sighed and shifted off his stomach, making Yana grumble at the sudden movement.

"So, do you want to hear about a sweet love story, or a dramatic adventure quest?" Armin inquired as he searched the bookshelf for another book.

"Adventure quest! Adventure quest!" She chanted happily, leaping up to peer at the colourful cover. I smiled softly at the two and sat up myself.

Armin smiled and scooped Yana up, walking back over and settling back down beside me. Yana crawled into my lap, staring at the book in Armin's hands intently. He laughed and opened it, tiny little dust mites flying out.

Armin took a deep breath, then began reading. It was a story of dragons and magic. One of a world without titans. Though the character may not have faced the horror of titans, they still faced many other problems.

I wished I could have lived in the character's world. The idea of not having to worry about Titans, Titan Shifters, Marley, it just seemed so surreal and amazing to me.

I sighed, completely zoning out to daydream about a world like that.

A while later, I felt a head lul against my shoulder, which brought me back to reality. I felt a small smile playing on my lips and a quiet laugh escaped at the sight of Yana, mouth hanging open and eyelids fluttering, fast asleep in my lap.

Armin stopped reading, laughing under his breath at the sight.

I gently picked up Yana and held her while Armin peeled back the covers of her bed so I could put her down. All the while, she remained utterly fast asleep. Armin silently put the book back on the shelf and joined me by the door.
