Chapter nine: New year interaction

Mara's pov:

"Come on slowpoke! I've seen you run faster than this, Armin!" I exclaimed, laughing while I ran side by side with Armin. He shot me a half hearted glare and kept running, panting for breath but not giving up.

"Not all of us have as much stamina as you, Mara!" Connie complained from where he ran a few feet ahead of us. I laughed and urged them on. Despite their protests and complaints, they both ran a little faster.

I grinned proudly and followed.

A few hours, and much exhausting training, later, the day of strenuous training was over. Me and the other cadets sat in a circle in the middle of the field. We had been sitting here for a while now, maybe an hour or two.

At one point, Eren and Jean had gotten into argument about how Jean looked, or didn't look if you were on his side, like a horse. Me, being the only sensible one that actually wanted my friends to get along, had been forced to defuse the fight.

Don't get me wrong, it was hilarious, but I really didn't need my friends arguing about one of them looking like a horse. Like, grow up a little, kiddos.

Currently, we all lay on our backs, our heads forming a circle in the middle and staring up at the dimming sky. It was relaxing, just talking and laughing.

"Mara, how come you're always so good at helping people?" Sasha asked randomly, making me laugh a little. I shrugged.

"Dunno. Old habits die hard, isn't that what they say?" I replied calmly. A few of my friends chuckled at my remark.

"Yeah but you're always doing nice things for your friends and never thinking about yourself!" Connie half complimented, half complained, if that made sense. I smiled at the thought.

I guess he's right.

"I remember the first time I met Mara, she made a flower crown and gave it to me instead of herself." Armin commented in an attempt to prove Connie's point. I smiled again, it had been because I didn't like wearing flower crowns all too much, but I supposed the gesture was all that mattered.

"Aw! I hope someone does that for me someday!" Mina said happily. I laughed, we all knew she was referring to Tomas. It was so obvious she liked him and he liked her, but apparently they were both just blind.

"Mara, could you teach me how to make a flower crown?" Krista asked. I found myself smiling again.

I loved teaching people stuff, it made me feel like I was doing something important. When I was younger, I'd actually wanted to be a teacher. I'd soon forgotten about that dream when I found out I could be a dressmaker like my mother. I'd learnt how to make a dress, and I helped my mother run her shop often. I knew my dresses probably weren't that good back then, but my mother had hung them up for sale nevertheless. She'd even worn them sometimes.
