It had been exactly a month since the tragic event took place, and Dr Tenma had absorbed most of his time into his work. He would leave for work early every morning and return home late every evening. He did this in an attempt to escape the harsh reality of his wife's passing.
As Tenma returned home one evening he realised that he had neglected something or rather someone, who he cared about with his entire heart. While he quickly made his way to the front door of the house he saw a police car parked near the house. Upon entering his house he was greeted by the sight of a police officer standing in the hallway. Once the officer noticed Tenma enter the house he approached the scientist and asked, "Are you Dr Tenma?" Tenma gave a nod in response and he then asked the officer to state his reasons for being in his house. The police officer looked Tenma in the eyes and simply said, "Someone in the neighborhood has reported signs of a child from this house being neglected."
Tenma's heart was filled with dread as he saw a female social worker appear in the hallway, with a young child sleeping peacefully in her arms. It was then when Tenma realised that he was so caught up in his work that had forgotten about his 3-year-old daughter.
"I've done a complete search around this house," the social worker began speaking, " And I must say that I'm not happy with this child's living conditions. There is a lack of food in this house, a lack of proper ventilation, a lack of warm clothing for the child and this place is caked with dust. There is also no adult supervision here, what if this child got injured while playing outside or what if she tripped down the stairs? And lastly do I need to mention that the front door was left open, what would you have done if she was kidnapped?"
The went quiet as Tenma couldn't find the right words to answer.
After some time the social worker spoke up, "Seeing as you are not fit to look after this child, she will be sent for adoption."
As the social worker walked past Tenma and began to leave Tenma followed behind in pursuit, but was stopped by the police officer as he stood in Tenma's way. "You can't take her away from me," Tenma began, "She is all I have left to live for." The social worker then stopped in her tracks after hearing Tenma's words, and she spoke up once more, without looking at him, "There is no need to worry about your child's safety, I'm sure a good family will look after her."
And with that both the social worker and police officer left, leaving Tenma to dwell on all his mistakes and bad decisions he had made. Tenma felt a dark and empty void begin to devour his heart. He had lost his beloved wife to illness and now his only child was taken from him, he didn't know what to do with his life anymore.
After what seemed like an eternity of silence, Tenma's phone had awoken from it's year-long slumber and began to ring. Upon answering the phone, Tenma heard the familiar voice of the doctor who had looked after his ill wife in hospital, "I'm sorry for your loss, but have you forgotten about your baby boy?"
Dr Tenma couldn't believe what he had just heard. He felt tears begin to build up as he remembered that his wife was expecting a baby boy.
As warm salty, tears rolled down his cheeks, Tenma was filled will joy as he was given a second chance at being a father.
