I immediately regretted my words but if I had the chance I would say them again. Worried about thewhizzing cars. I jumped over the guardrail, and went into the tiny space at the bottom of the small hill on the side of the road. I sat with my back against the hill. Many kids in this situation would be scared out of their mind's, but I've been through enough in this world that this didn't scare me.
While I sat there, I thought while listening to the cars go by. I wished Mom would find my iPod so that she would listen to the last song I was listening to. I loved both my mom and dad equally, but at times I did take sides. There were times when I sided with my mom, others when I sided with my dad. Sure, my dad wasn't always the nicest guy, but he still didn't deserve what my mom did to him, and my mom didn't deserve to be taken back. That had to prove something. That had to prove that he loved her. Who would re-marry the girl that cheated on him and had a kid with someone else. Maybe my dad did not exactly share the same love that my mom had for Harmony, but nonetheless he still loved her, somehow. What angered me the most was that my mom actually still thought of Aaron.
Sometime later, I managed to pull my phone out.
"Jake?" I asked.
"Trinity? What's wrong?" He asked.
"Nothing. Can you just come pick me up?" I said.
"Yeah, where are you?"
"Um, near mile marker 41 on Route 54..." I said, glancing around.
"You're on the side of the highway? Why?" He asked.
"I'll explain when you get here." I said, hanging up the phone.
When Jake finally arrived, it was dark because a storm was rolling in, and I was getting cold. Jake pulled over and jumped over the guardrail to go get me. He wrapped an arm around me as we walked up, "You've been crying, Trin?"
"Yeah," I admitted.
We both got into the car.
"Why?" He asked.
"You know, just my mom... and my dad...and Aaron."
"How did you end up on the side of the highway?"
I went on to explain everything to him, eventually crying.
When we reached town he asked me, "You don't want me to bring you back to your house, right?"
"There's no way I'm going to face my mom. Not yet. Tomorrow my dad will be back, and I'll go home."
"Alright."
*******
The next day, early in the morning, Jake dropped me off at my house.
I unlocked the door and stepped inside. In front of me was Harmony, just sitting in the middle of the floor.
"Harmony, where's mommy?" I asked.
"In her office. She's been there all night. Is she ok, Trinity?" She said back.
"I'm sure she's fine," I lied to Harmony, "Why don't you go play with your Barbie dolls?"
Harmony scurried off to go find her dolls and I made my way into the kitchen. The cabinet my parents kept all their alcoholic drinks in was empty. Great, my mom's drunk, she'll be much more easy to deal with. I wish.
I knocked on the door to my mom's office.
"Come in!" I tipsy voice called.
"Mom?" I said as I opened up the door slowly.
"What?" She whined as I walked in.
I walked over to her, she was laughing random stuff, "What's my phone number?"
"Ok, mommy, its time to give Trinity the wine," I talked to her like I would talk to a three-year-old.
"Trinity, oh, Trinity. I was thinking. I love, love, love Harmony, but I love Aaron even more," She slurred.
"Ok, mommy, it's time to shut up now," I said, not wanting to hear more.
Harmony came running up to me, "Trinity! Daddy's here!" She was so excited.
Dad. Oh, god, if Dad sees mom like this...
I ran out of the office, closing the door quietly behind me.
"Hi, Dad," I hugged him, "Oh, here, I'll bring the bags upstairs."
"Hi, Trinity. It's ok, I've got the bags," Dad said, surprisingly happy.
He picked up the bags and brought them upstairs. I walked up with him. He was just setting the bags down on his bed when I heard, "Aaron!" It was my mom. Bad timing mom. Bad timing.
