Before the Apocolypse happened, I loved zombie movies. The freakier the better. Now...I wished every single zombie was wiped off the face of the planet and I had never even watched those damned movies to begin with.
Curled up in the bed I had commandeered, I waited for 10k to finish his watch. I had taken the one before him, but I couldn't seem to get to sleep. So now I lay staring up at the ceiling listening to the crickets and the occasional owl outside.
I sat up as the door creaked open and 10k's silhouette slipped in before closing it once again. Propped up on one elbow, I asked, "How did it go?"
10k's slender form stripped out of his jacket and propped his rifle by the bed as he replied, "All quiet. Warren took the next watch. But you should be asleep."
I smiled tiredly, pulling back the covers to make room for him as he crawled into bed beside me. Wrapping one arm around my waist, he pulled me close against his chest. Laying my head on his chest, I listened to the steady beating of his heart as I said, "It's hard to sleep without you here."
10k's chuckle rumbled in his chest. Bending his head, he kissed my forehead, "Well, I'm here now."
