Valentine's Special: The Very Worst Holiday

On Valentine's Day morning, I came into the kitchen to find my roommate Tom lying sprawled all over the couch, scrolling through social media. I put on a pot of tea and sat down next to him while I waited.

"Happy Gooey Sap Day, Tom!" I laughed, nudging him in the arm. Tom and I were best friends in love, which meant we agreed and disagreed about a lot of things. But one opinion we both shared wholeheartedly was the fact that Valentine's Day was the very worst holiday in the history of the world. In fact, every year we did our best to forget all about the infamous 14th.

"Happy Gooey Sap Day, weirdo!" Tom responded, clicking off his phone.

"So....what do you want to do today? I mean we can't very well go anyplace without everyone being all coupley and stuff." We simultaneously shuddered at the thought.

"I'm not sure! Let me think." Tom stared at the ceiling and I absentmindedly played with my rings. Tom looked down at my hands distractedly and then his eyes widened with the beginnings of an idea. "Heyyyy," he said smirking, "I think I might have an idea!"

"What's that?" I asked warily, knowing his mischief face well. Tom leaned over and whispered something into my ear. I grinned immediately.

"That's brilliant!"

We got into the car as fast as we could and headed to our favorite breakfast place.

"Okay, if we're going to hit the diner, the coffee shop, the bistro, the Italian restaurant on 7th and the ice cream parlour we're going to have to work fast," Tom told me as if he was briefing a military advance.

"Yessir!" I saluted, playing along as we parked at the diner. We hurried inside and took a seat at a booth. Once we'd started on our food and gotten comfortable, Tom cleared his throat dramatically and produced one of my cheapo zirconium Target rings from his pocket. Then made an exaggerated proposal speech quite loudly. I, of course, dramatically said yes and the entire restaurant applauded as he slipped my ring back onto my finger. Naturally, we got the entire meal for free, exactly as planned.

"This is brilliant, Tom! Worked like a charm!" I exclaimed, my belly wonderfully full of chocolate chip pancakes as we returned to the car.

"Right?! Okay. Where to next?"

So the day continued on. Tom's proposals got cheesier and cheesier and I even added tears a few times just for effect. The plan went off without a hitch and by dinner time we'd gotten free pancakes from the diner, complimentary coffee from the local cafe, sandwiches on the house at the bistro, and free ice cream from the parlour down the street.

We were about to pull the trick again at the Italian place, but I noticed Tom looked a bit nervous.  He fiddled with his hands under the table and kept shifting his eyes.

"Hey, what's going on? You've been doing great all day! Don't tell me you're getting all nervy now!"

"Nothing! I'm fine," Tom said a little too quickly with a chaste grin. I cocked an eyebrow. "Ready?"

"Sure?" I responded. I was ready to act my arse off, but when Tom reached into his pocket, he didn't pull out the ring. Instead, he came up with a tiny red velvet box. I cocked my head inquisitively. I expected another cheesy one-line proposal, but Tom surprised me.

"Y/N, I know you don't like cheesy romantic things like long-winded speeches or cliche movie quotes. But that's why I love you. You're one of the most real and wonderful people I have ever known and I'm so lucky to have fallen in love with my very best friend. I've never liked Valentine's Day, but this year I think I might have changed my mind. It's been the best day of the year so far because I got to spend it all with you. And that got me thinking....I think I'd like to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?"

Tom popped open the red velvet box. There sat the most beautiful genuine diamond engagement ring I'd ever seen. My jaw dropped open. Was he serious? I couldn't tell.

"For real," Tom chuckled as if he had sensed my thoughts.

"I...Tom...Yes! Yes I will," I cried, tears stinging my eyes for real. I leaned over and kissed Tom as he removed the fake ring from my finger and replaced it with the real one.

"Thank you for the best Valentine's present I could have received," Tom whispered.
