"Aru, wake up."
Arundhati Shah woke up to her older sister, Kara, gently shaking her.
"Didi, it's sunday," groaned Aru, burying herself in her blankets.
"No, it's monday," said Kara as she pulled back the closed curtains, and bright sunlight almost blinded Aru. "Come on, get up. Dad wants a word with you."
Grumbling, Aru got up and walked to her mirror. Her dark hair was much more messy than it usually was. Her eyes looked super tired and had eyebags under them. She even had drool on her chin. This was not how an eighteen-year-old should look like.
Kara walked over to Aru and wiped the drool off her face with a tissue. She looked at Aru in the mirror.
"Arundhati, you're a lady. And you're the heir of Black Emperor. You should start caring about your appearance more," scolded Kara. Aru rolled her eyes. Her older sister sighed and started brushing her hair. Aru stared as she did.
Why are you the heir when Kara is older than you? The new members always asked. And Aru's answer was always the same. Kara was only her half-sister. They had the same mother, but different fathers. Kara's biological dad died before Kara was even born, and so, Krithika, her mother, raised Kara on her own. Then, she met Suyodhana, Aru's father. They then started dating, and eventually got married and had Aru. Aru's dad does see Kara as his own, but Kara told Aru that she had a feeling he just wanted an heir who was related to him.
"Aru, get dressed. Dad is waiting for you," said Kara, startling Aru. She looked at the mirror again to see her hair neatly braided. Kara patted her shoulder and left the room.
Aru sighed and put on some clothes: a white tee, dark jeans, and a black leather jacket. And the necklace her mother gave her, gold, heart shaped, three small yellow beads in the front, and her initials on the back in pretty handwriting.
Aru did not bother making her bed and left her room. She wrinkled her nose as she remembered her dad's office was three floors above.
Finally, she reached her destination. Aru took a deep breath before knocking on the door.
"Enter," a deep voice, her father's, answered.
Aru opened the door, and Suyodhana Shah, current president of Black Emperor, stood there, as tall and handsome as a king.
"Ah, Arundhati, there you are," he said warmly. "Take a seat."
He had messy dark hair, like hers, his skin a soft brown; his collar was open far enough for Aru to see his pendant necklace, given by Aru's mom. But his eyes were mismatched. One eye was blue, one was brown. But Aru never minded, because his eyes were really pretty.
Suyodhana was also given a lot of titles, like the Manipulator. He was absolutely excellent when it comes to manipulating people. But there was one title that always confused Aru. The Sleeper, they would call him. Why? Was it because he was secretly good at hybernating?
"Kara told me you wanted to talk to me," said Aru, sitting down.
"Yes, I do. But first of all, I'm sorry for waking you up such early in the morning," Dad said apologetically.
"It's okay, this seems important."
"Indeed it is." Her dad's expression suddenly turned extremely serious. "I've been hearing things, you know. Rumors. About the Black Dragons," he said, pacing around the room.
Aru held her breath. The Black Dragons was a gang led by the Archaryas, and the gang who fought the Black Emperor for many generations, ever since it was founded.
"As you know, the Black Dragons are getting more wealthier by the day," her dad started. That was true, Aru thought. "And then some members of the 5th division came to me and said they overheard two members of the Black Dragons talking about picking up gold."
Gold? thought Aru.
"But, dad, those guys could have easily been lying, and they might be spies!" said Aru.
"That's what I worry too," her dad answered. "That's why I want you to act as spy."
That made Aru stop. She was going on a real spy mission! It was her dream to be on spy missions ever since she was a kid, and everytime she would hear her uncle, Subala, a.k.a uncle Boo, would go on a spy mission, she would beg him to let her come with her.
Aru wanted to say something, a polite thank you at least, but she was simply too stunned to speak. So instead, she squealed, ran to her dad, and gave him a big hug. It must have hurt him a little though, because he winced. But he chuckled it off and hugged her back.
"Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!" said Aru, hugging her dad tighter. What? She is a human, and humans can be overly excited. Aru let her dad go and held his hands. "I will not let you down," she promised.
"I know," her dad said softly, and patted her head. "But, just in case, I'm sending some of the strongest members from Kara's division," he added. Aru nodded.
"You must get along with them, you must make them think that you will be their most loyal member. Get information, then tell me after," her dad said. "Am I understood?"
"Yes," said Aru. Her dad smiled at her.
"Good. Dismissed."
Aru muttered an 'excuse me' and left the room, knowing damn well she was about to make her father proud.
