Year 2314.

Just one year after the failure of the Kerberos mission. The crew was confirmed dead, but there was no evidence to prove it.

The Galaxy Garrison had kept quiet about exactly how the Kerberos mission failed.

For all we know, the crew could have been one of the first humans to come in contact with extraterrestrial life and decided to take the Earthlings because it turns out we were in their territory.

But that's just (Y/N)'s theory.

"Roll out, donkeys!" Commander Iverson shouted as Junior Cadets McLain, Garrett, and Gunderson walked out of the simulator. They stood in front of the class, heads bowed and hands at their sides.

"They're going to get chewed out," Officer (Y/N) (l/n) whispered as she gazed from the balcony overhead, next to Officer Adam West.

She was tasked to grade each team in the simulator, an individual and team grade. Depending on how they do would determine their future career within the Garrison, and it was (Y/N)'s job at the moment.

Fun.

"Unfortunately," Adam agreed, face remaining emotionless, but his brows were slightly furrowed.

"Well, let's see if we can't use this complete failure as a lesson for the rest of you students." Iverson then faced the rest of his class. "What mistakes did these three so-called cadets make in the simulator?"

"The engineer puked in the main gearbox."

"Yes, as everyone knows, vomit is not an approved lubricant for engine systems." Cadet Garrett looked even downer, if that was possible. "What else?"

"The Comm Spec removed his safety harness!"

"The pilot crashed!"

"Correct." Iverson turned back to the failed team. "And worst of all, the whole jump, they're arguing with each other! Heck, if you're going to be this bad individually, you'd better at least be able to work as a team! The Galaxy Garrison exists to turn young cadets like you into the next generation of elite astro-explorers, but these kind of mental mistakes are exactly what cost the lives of the men on the Kerberos Mission."

"That's not true, sir!" Cadet Gunderson argued and (Y/N)'s (e/c) eyes widened in shock just slightly.

You don't just 'talk back' to Iverson. That's probably a death sentence.

"What did you say?!" Iverson demanded and Cadet McClain covered Gunderson's mouth in a panic.

"Sorry, sir!" the taller cadet apologized, profusely. "I-I-I think he may have hit his head when he fell out of his chair, but point taken."

"I hope I don't need to remind you that the only reason your here is that the best pilot in your class had a discipline issue and flunked out," he reminded McLain and (Y/N) winced. "Don't follow in his footsteps. Next!"

"That was a low blow," Adam murmured and (Y/N) nodded, her grip on her tablet tight, but she softened it immediately. She didn't want to break another one and have to replace it.

"Yeah," she said just as softly. "A low blow."

[LATER]

(Y/N) knew something big was going to happen tonight.

Not just from what Keith told her, but also there was this feeling. Telling her that everything is going to change.

Tonight.

A security guard saluted her as she passed (even though she was out of uniform), her nodding in response before he continued his patrol.
