"wait... what?"
"you'll be acting as a waitress for our guests tonight," ei repeated. "because mona has fallen ill, we need an extra person."
"and that person has to be me?" you asked. "i'm sorry, ma'am, but why?"
"wait. ei, this is not what we agreed on," yae said as she stomped into the room as elegantly as possible. "i said i wanted her to attend, not serve everyone else."
"it's either this or she stays in her room for the entire night. no one will remember her face if they believe she's just a servant," ei replied. "if you want her to interact with them, she'll do this."
yae looked over to you as you stared at your feet. you weren't sure what to think; of course, it wasn't much of a surprise that she wouldn't let you attend properly, but you never expected to act as part of the staff. and to think ei didn't even discuss it with you.
"it's your choice, y/n," yae stated, causing you to glance up.
"um, i'll... i'll be a waitress. thank you for your generosity, ma'am," you bowed your head before hastily stepping out of the room, your heels clicking against the tile.
you didn't want to be ungrateful since you never got the chance to see guests whenever they were in the castle, but something in your heart felt crooked. your body felt like a machine, except one of the cogs stopped turning, causing the entire whole to fall apart. you blinked away the tears that threatened to arise and took a deep breath, putting on a smile. this was what you always did in an attempt to convince yourself that you were happy.
