"You had no right." He snarled, stepping closer to Eskel with his 'scary face' as Jaskier liked to call it. Fuck, there he was thinking about the Bard again.
"Someone needed to say it. I had a feeling the others weren't going to, and I'm guessing they know already?" Something must have shown on Geralt's face because Eskel chuckled dryly and nodded. "Thought so."
Geralt sheathed his sword and squared up his shoulders. "I had one thing. One fucking thing, that made me the closest to happy I've been in years and you-" He snarled, fists clenching at his sides. "you fucked it up. I'm going to chase after that stupid fucking bard and put this right, and if I hear you say another goddamned word against him I will put you in the ground."
Eskel backed up slightly, either taken aback by the threat, or worried Geralt might swing at him, either way the message had sunk in.
The corridor seemed unending now that Geralt knew it was all that was between him and his Bard. He jogged down it looking and listening for a sign of Jaskier. There was nothing. He knew it was not strictly what the elixir was for, but he downed it anyway, honing his senses enough to hear all through the fort. Including the song.
His voice was floating through the hall, and he followed it. It was not a song he'd heard before."Emotionless, they often call him
But his love's got losing my wit
It sets my heart racing, it feels all-embracing
For all that I try to stop it"Geralt would never admit how much he loved the Bard's voice, the way it rose and fell with every ounce of emotion he put into his songs, though this one held more feeling than many of his others. He jogged on, still following the voice, wondering where the hell Jaskier had wandered off to.
"A storm raging on the horizon
Of longing and heartache and lust
His heart hides away, never on display
So tell me, love, tell me, love, how is that just?""But the story is this:
He'll destroy with his sweet kiss, his sweet kiss
But the story is this:
He'll destroy with his sweet kiss"Geralt froze at one of the archways that lead back outside, it was a space he very rarely visited, a small herb garden of sorts, and as such it was sheltered from the elements. His bard was sat on the low wall that surrounded the space, his back against one of the thick stone pillars that held up the half-roof. Geralt stopped himself on the threshold and listened. It was so rare that he could appreciate Jaskier's songs without him knowing, and besides, he'd heard the lyrics, he knew the song was about him, and he wanted to know where it was ending.
"His current is pulling me closer
And charging the hot, humid night
The red sky at dawn is giving a warning, you fool
Better stay out of sight
I'm weak my love, and I am wanting
If this is the path I must trudge
I'll welcome my sentence, give to you my penance
Garroter, jury, and judge"Was that what it felt like? Was that what Geralt made him feel like? Like a punishment, like he wasn't loved, more tolerated. The Witcher knew Jaskier had an open and freely given heart that would feel the pain of heartbreak more acutely, but he never thought he would the cause of that heartbreak.
"But the story is this:
He'll destroy with his sweet kiss, his sweet kiss, o-oh
But the story is this:
He'll destroy with his sweet kiss, o-o-o-o-oh
But the story is this:
He'll destroy with his sweet kiss, his sweet kiss, o-oh
But the story is this:
He'll destroy with his sweet kiss, o-o-o-o-oh
The story is-"
"Jaskier." Geralt interjected, stepping out of the shadows and into the weak light of the courtyard. It really had been a beautiful song, but so full of pain that the Witcher hadn't been able to bear another moment of it. The Bard straightened and looked away from Geralt, his jaw visibly clenching as he held back rage. Never in his life had Geralt been so afraid. Afraid to say the wrong thing, afraid of losing Jaskier.
