1.| Bust a move
It was a fresh start in a new city, well more of a bustling town-suburb? She wasn't sure if Evergreen could be called a city. Evergreen was the newest stop in a slew of gigs. Being a PI had its perks, she could up and move when she wanted to, no one or thing was in her life to keep her in one place, and if she was honest, she loved the adventure. Never sure what the next day could bring, it always kept things in a chaotic rhythm that gave her a strange peace. On the nights when her work was less active, she'd write anonymously for a crime blog that she sparingly kept up with, secretly wishing she could pursue her hobby full time.
The job that had brought her to Evergreen was small-time, just a petty detective gig, where her client was hoping to catch their ex breaking a clause in their separation agreement. Most of her cases fell along these lines, very rarely had she been elated to take on a case that involved two star-crossed lovers as it always ended the same: humdrum, boring, and predictable. Most of her jobs were just a few weeks in duration and she'd opted for renting out apartments while traveling versus hotels. The constant parade of stained sheets, stiff comforters, and random pubic hairs had gotten old. She was lucky to be right down the road from a charming Italian restaurant, and around the corner from a coffee shop. Maybe she'd settle here for a bit.
The jubilant affinity for crime had started at a young age, when she'd pretend to bust family members, handing out citations and collecting bail money in the form of cookies or fruit snacks, her liking for law enforcement had heightened and carried on through grade school, it was actually pretty recently she'd had to take a step back, removed herself from the live wire action of being an active officer to opt for something a little more detective-y. It was less flashy, and officers would treat her like dirt when she tried to partner with them for cases or request evidence. Her favorite part was when a civilian found out what she did, there was always that momentary pause. The seconds would tick by, but to Jenna, it always felt like an eternity before they would blankly answer her with an "oh" or " okay", not sure how to react to gaining the information that she wasn't a police officer, but a private investigator. Sometimes she wasn't sure what she was herself, often referring to her job as a chat host from the old show "cheaters".
Most of her clientele came from word of mouth or through Craigslist, either way when they met her, almost always were they surprised. Expecting a 6"2 ex-cop with rippling pectorals and a chewing tobacco problem, instead, they were met with her. Who was just shy of 5"5 and her signature look was her short straw-colored hair and blue eyes. The ads were purposely posted in a masculine user name, something gross and witty, 'bootymaster17' or 'bigdicksteve221', she learned quickly that anything that resembled femininity would be ignored in the PI world. For some reason, the sleazy people trusted men more than women. Sexist. The day she changed her credentials is the day she started getting referrals up the ass. Evergreen had recently had its own booming criminal activity, with a homicide dealing with a young woman and a slew of missing persons, so she was hoping to get more work. She'd only brought what could fit in her car, after relocating so many times, you learn to prioritize what you do and don't need. Most of her life had fit snuggly into seven cardboard confinements and two travel bags.
