Prologue | Disgraced
𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭. Officer Canes had big plans, she was going to change the game. But being empathetic and kind was a weakness, it only left an opening for others to take advantage of her, and eventually clouded her judgment enough that she'd gotten arrogant, that she fucked up big time. The perp that she'd been tailing for weeks got wind of her swat team's visit and a shoot-out ensued, leaving two dead and completely destroying her mind and body.
She trembled, sitting in her precinct with blood still embedded under her nails, and her sapphire eyes stained pink from hot tears. She was completely broken. The weeks following the media painted her as a villain, a runaway cop that had gotten a mother and her child murdered in cold blood. She was placed on leave before being officially let go, her supervisor letting her know, " You're just too kind for this, Jenna. " And you know what, he was right.
All of that self-hatred was ingrained in her, causing her to abandon her family, her friends. She sold her belongings, her home and took up a job as a traveling PI. Still helping others, but now from a safe distance.
Arriving in Evergreen was part of the plan, making some quick cash and snapping some racy photos of vengeful divorcees was part of the plan, but Adrian? He was not.
Stumbling onto something a little less earthly and a little more frightening, Jenna's thrown into chaos she can't understand and seeks help from her new ally. Not realizing at the time that her ally at night and her only friend in Evergreen are one and the same.
