The Shadows POV
"REN GET OVER HERE!" my commanding officer screamed. I just sighed and jogged over to him. "We are shipping up to the front lines and working with the 107th regiment. Try not to get killed" he explained with a slight hint of annoyance in his voice. "Sir! Yes sir!" I saluted as he walked away.
As soon as he was out of sight, I raced towards my tent and packed my small amount of belongings. Finally I get to save people instead of being stared at and looked at like I don't belong. Ill show all of them. Even though I'm a woman, I have a place on the war front just as much as men.
I was practically buzzing by the time I woke up. In just a few hours, I would be on the front lines saving lives for my country. The self defense training Bucky gave me would finally be put to use and when I return home to Buck and Steve I'll no longer be the little girl that needs protecting.
                                    **********Time skip to the frontlines**********
When we arrived, men were screaming bodies were dropping bullets were flying and all I could think about was how exhilarating this was. I paused for a fraction of a second to collect myself and then I was off to the first wounded soldier in my reach. He had a gunshot wound to his upper so shoulder and his knee. I immediately pulled gauze for my med pack and applied pressure to his shoulder. I applied a turneque to his knee and then had him continue applying pressure to his shoulder and my day continued as such losing men helping the ones that survived and so on and so on. My days on the front continued just the same. Until one fateful day that changed my life forever.
I had ventured too close to the Germans side when helping wounded that I was inevitably shot. Right through my femoral artery. I knew I didn't have much time before I bled out so I thought of the things that bring me comfort. The two boys I left behind my closests and most dearest friends. I pictured their faces as the world started to dark and as I took my last breath, I could have sworn I heard Buckys' trademark phrase "Until the end of the line".
      *************************************************

I awoke with a gasp strapped down to a chair. I looked around as mulch as the contraption tied to my head would allow me. I was in my looked to be a fighting pit expect instead of fighters their were scientists and what looked to be some sort of medical equipment. I stopped looking around when I heard a sinister laugh. I looked over to see a little man with glasses.
"Ahh, fraulein your finally avake. Now ve may begin" he said through his think German accent a sneer taking over his face. I struggled in my seat trying to get out of the bonds and attack him. "Ah, ah, ah Fraulein. ve vill have none of zhat. Now to begin. Vhat is your name?" he questioned patting my head. I tried to get out of his grip but the binds wouldn't let me yet again. "Like I'd tell a piece of crap like you! How am I healed?! I died on the battle field!" I yelled still trying to fully grasp the situation. "Zhat, Fraulein is for me to know and you to vonder. Now everyvone time to begin" he commanded and all the scientists around him scattered around and did his bidding. He held something in front of my mouth and told me to bite down but I refused. He got angry and grabbed my jaw and shoved whatever it was inside my mouth.
A scientist handed him a needle "Ahh now we can truly begin" he sneered as he shoved the needle into my arm. As he pushed down on the plunger, a fire spread through my vines burn ing me from the inside out. I couldn't scream and I couldn't move. I had to sit there and  wish I was dead while the scientists laughed and clapped. The short man with glasses hit a switch and all the sudden I was filled with an even worse pain. volts of electricity shot through me head first. The short man hit another switch and the electricity vamped up. By this time I was on the verge of passing out. He hit yet another switch before the world went black.
I was awoken yet again still trapped to the chair only I couldn't remember what happened at all. I only remember going to the local diner with Steve and Bucky the night before and all the sudden I'm here. "Hello Fraulein, you have nice sleep? Ve need to get back to vork. Vhat is your name?" He questioned with a smirk on his face. "I believe it's Rene Elliot but I don't know why I here. Did I do something wrong sir...." I replayed not knowing his name. "I am Arnim Zola but you call ve Zola. You are here because you have done somezhing none of my ozher patients have done." He replied his smirk still continuously growing. "May I ask mr. Zola, what I did?" I asked still very unsure of him and this place. "You, my dear Fraulein, survived a bullet to your femoral artery and you managed to take in 1000 volts of electricity before your heart restarted. Zhe lezhal dose is 50. You my dear Fraulein should be dead." He still finished with a deep laugh.
I was speechless. How am I still alive? I couldn't think straight this was crazy how did I even end up here... "Fraulein I see you are still confused so lets continue on yes? Bite down on this" He said as he grabbed my jaw and shoved something in my mouth. He hit a switch and I was filled with shocks. I struggled in my restraints. He hit another two switches and I lost feeling in my body but I hadn't passed out yet. He hit a further two more switches before he spoke again "Four Zhousand volts! Ve have done it men! Our first victory of many." He then started saying a series of words , "Lost, longing, gunshot, twilight, twenty, innocent, nine, homecoming, zero, battlefield"
My mind was lost I couldn't control my body. "Ready to comply" my voice said as my mind went completely blank.  "You, Fraulein are The Shadow. The very first super soldier the test subject that is making the Winter Soldier program possible. You will capture the first specimen of the Winter Soldier program and work with the first Winter Soldier. Now here is your target" Zola said as he showed me a file with a photo of a young man with dark brown hair, blue eyes, and a slight cleft chin. His name read "Sargent James Buchanan Barnes". "Ready to comply" I responded my mind now solely on my mission as Zola undid my restraints.
