Chapter 4

In the dead of the night, civilians were almost non-existent on the dirt roads of the town. Small torches were lighting up the white homes that were tilted on the walls. Several soldiers wearing light bronze armour and small shields on their sides. Holding long silver spears in hand and walking side by side. MiMi was standing against the wall of a house, peeking her head out to them. She was focused on them as two walks passed her. When in the clear, she lightly runs to the next house for cover. She was planted again on the side of another house while an additional pair of soldiers walked on the dirt path in front of her. “I have to make this right. It's my fault we are in this mess right now, so it's my duty to make it right”, MiMi said in her mind. After they passed, she crossed the road and ran full speed out of the congested housing area.

MiMi stood over a small slope that dropped down to a small pathway. She looks over to the right and spots a small worn out open shed. It was discolored with rust all over the thin sheet metal. “Hm”, she said as she stared at the roof. “Maybe in there”, she continued to say out loud. MiMi gets low to the ground and slides down the small slope. A cloud of brown smoke trails behind her as she descends. Once she was on level, she walked over in front of the broken down structure. Inside, there were many broken and beaten up items. Baskets, hammers, shoes, and farm equipment lay around throughout the shed. She sticks half of her body inside and moves stuff around. She throws some of the things in the air just to get underneath them. “Come on! There has to be at least one in here. Huh!? Yes! Here's one”, said MiMi. She backs up and lifts up her body. In her right hand was a medium sized bucket with several dings on its circumference. It was made of metal with a thin handle at the top. “Please! Please no holes”! She moves it around and upside down. “Yes! No holes! This will work perfectly! I wonder why anyone would throw this out like that. Oh well”, she said, giving a smile. She lowers the bucket and holds it by the handle to her right side. “SNAP”! The handle breaks off its hinges and the bucket falls to the ground. “THUMP”! “Ah”, said MiMi frightened from the sudden jolt, but was then ridden with disappointment. “Oh. That's why”, she said softly while mopping.

While holding the now fixed metal bucket, she continued on down a dirt road that slowly descended down a small slope. Walking further down it, adding the distance from her home. At the base of the slope she reaches a flat area with the forest line out in front of her. Her eyes locks on the nearby trees as they slowly sway from the gentle winds. She then lets out a long sigh and begins to walk forward. “MiMi! Stop”, yells a familiar voice behind her. She stops and looks down to the ground while dropping her shoulders. She slowly looks back to see Mel standing about 15 feet away from her. She stares at him with hate in her eyes. “What are you doing”, said MiMi in a low tone. “You know, I am the one who needs to ask you that. Don't tell me that you're trying to go back there”, said Mel unyieldingly. “I don't need to tell you anything”, said MiMi looking back in front of her. “WHAT!? Are you stupid!? Are you serious about going back in the dead of night!? There are dangerous people roaming around at theses sort of times. You could get hurt out there”! “Mel! Get out of here. Go back home and don't tell anyone about this”! “Hey! I'm older than you! I'm the big brother of the house! You don't tell me what to do like that MiMi! Why are you acting like this!? Huh!?”. “You know why! I've failed our family! It's only right to do this. It's the only way to get a resolve out of this”. “No it isn't! We will figure something out, TOGETHER! There's no need for this little act you're trying to pull”! “Mel! Leave me now”! “What the hell happened when you two were gone”, yells Mel. MiMi hearts stops as quick flashbacks of the wounds her and Dula suffered from those men. There was a long silence between them. “I fell”, MiMi replied. “STOP LYING! I'm not foolish enough to believe that story. Tell the truth”, said Mel with a serious tone. “I wish not to tell. Just leave it as a simple fall. Just let me do this Mel. It's just something I have to do on my own. I can't live another second without this chance”, said MiMi with an imaginary wall behind every word. Mel didn't utter a sound while MiMi just pounds him with a heavy glare. He then loses his tension and sighs. “Will you return before sunrise”, asked Mel. “I promise you that this will only take minutes, and don't worry. I will be safe”. “That's all I wanted to know. Be true to your word and hurry back”, said Mel crossing his arms and keeping his head high. With that, MiMi quickly turns around and darts to the trees behind them. Mel watches as her figure disperses into the leaves. “Why won't you listen, MiMi”?
