chapter five
⭒ ♛ ⭒The drive home was deafening.
Not in sound, but in silence. Alara could only stare between her father and his best friends, and wonder what exactly had happened at the dojo that led to the most awkward car ride of her life.
After the class she had taken over came to an end, she found that her father, Billy, and Ralph were still speaking in rushed whispers between one another. When she had hesitantly approached and asked if everything was alright, her father had simply patted her on the back and told her to the start the car.
The wasn't an odd occurrence. He usually sent her ahead to make sure the air conditioning was at full blast before he even stepped near the dark leather seats. They attracted heat like moths to a flame.
But, it was his eyes that left her pondering.
The look in them was something she knew well. It was the face he made when they nearly fell into bankruptcy, before the dojo.
It was the look he'd been wearing when he was debating on the house they currently lived in and had spent the last nine years in— a million dollar splurge (that wasn't really a splurge because the market prices in Ontario were just that high) they would have never been able to afford before the dojo.
It was a contemplative expression that usually told Alara that a big change was coming. What she didn't understand, though, was what the change had to do with her suspiciously quiet godfathers?
The curiosity was driving her insane. She tried to catch their eye and get a rough idea through hand gestures, but it was hard when she was in the passenger seat and they were in the back.
Alara looked down at her phone and opened up a group chat she shared with her godfathers. Kalan was in it too, but never messaged as often as they did.
