Okay, this one's going to be more of an actual monster- you know, like the ones under kid's beds? Anyway, the best way to make a monster is by giving vague details. While you, the writer, think something looks really scary as a description, not everyone will find it as horrifying as you will.
Here's what I mean- If you start to describe your monster in great detail, you're going to lose your readers and you will caught up in the description. And it can be as vague or almost specific as needed. I'll show you what I mean:
For vague:
Tall, glowing eyes, sharp fangs, and big claws.
With this open description, your readers can fill in the rest- How tall is it? What color is it? does it have scales? Yellowed teeth or pearly whites? Thick, black claws or thin, sharp ones? The list goes on. The downside to this one is that your monster will be too generic.
For almost specific:
Huge, dark fur, sharp teeth and claws for tearing flesh, and piercing yellow eyes shining in the dark.
This one's more descriptive and you can see the creature a bit clearer than the last one. But there's still enough open spots for the reader to fill in- Is the fur matted? Is it hunched over? Are the claws and fangs really long? If so, does it drool and snarl? The eyes- are they tired and bloodshot?
In my opinion, use vague for if you're writing about a monster in passing. Like, "Oh yeah, there's this thing, it looks like this... uh that's about it." And use more specifications if your monster plays a bigger part. "Oh yeah, that thing's huge! And it'll tear you apart in seconds! Be careful- don't make direct eye contact. I heard it howl not too far off a few nights ago, gave me the chills!"
With using the clearer description, you give your readers a better base to build their monster because let's face it- there's nothing more terrifying than the human mind. (I mean, someone has to write those horror movies right?)
If you want, I can expand on how to use vague and more descriptive ways in other situations.
That's all for now! ^w^
