Chapter 118 – Lantern Festival (2)
[T/N: 元宵 (Yuánxiāo) – 15th night of the first lunar month]
After they had enough fun, the two of them returned to the boat to rest for a while. Under Chu Jinglan's intentional or otherwise amelioration, Ye Huaiyang's fear of water subsided a lot and coupled with so many brightly-colored and cute lanterns, the glittering river was not as frightful anymore. Coincidentally, she was a little hungry now, hence the two people had some supper on the pleasure boat.
The boat had everything needed. Since today was after all the Lantern Festival, Ye Huaiyang had Yue'ya made two bowls of as customary to the festival. There were osmanthus, strawberry and even the most common sesame groundnut fillings. Each was plumply stuffed with a smooth coating and juicy. Steaming hot sweet aroma instantly filled the lips and teeth from just a bite off the porcelain spoon.
Chu Jinglan has never liked these sweet foods. He put down the spoon after taking two bites then urged her from time to time to be careful of scalding her tongue. She responded with a smile then took advantage of the cooling gap to bring up amusing incidents of her childhood's Lantern Festival. He shook his head as he listened then amidst the talks and laughter, there was a sudden jolt on the deck followed closely by the sound of shadow guards unsheathing their swords.
Who is so bold as to dare trespass here?
The two of them were trying to see who this uninvited guest was when a familiar voice drifted in which was still as quirky but deliberately lowered.
"What's the display of knives, can't you see it's this little master ah? Make way, make way. This little master wants to go in to stay low."
Saying that, Chu Zhenghe entered unceremoniously and immediately closed the door like a thief. Turning around, he found Chu Jinglan staring at him coldly and pulled out a flattering smile at once.
"Why are you here?" Ye Huaiyang shook the glutinous rice ball in her hand at him, "Want a bowl?"
Chu Zhenghe, who was stifled by the cold aura, was so touched that he almost cried and nodded his head hurriedly before sitting down on the edge of the low table and said, "It's still the Imperial Sister-in-law who is the best."
Chu Jinglan did not intend to let him go and asked bluntly, "Who did you provoked again?"
Chu Zhenghe smiled awkwardly upon hearing this. Before he could explain the reason, there was a loud noise outside which made Ye Huaiyang drop her spoon out of shock. Frowning, Chu Jinglan stroked her chest then opened the window in passing to look out. It turned out two pleasure boats had a side collision. However, there were no casualties and the hull was not damaged.
With such a wide river, even if there were many boats, it was difficult to crash into another and from this angle, this obviously appeared intentional. Staring at the two incomparably luxurious boats, Chu Jinglan could see the inklings from the shouting of the crowd above.
It was Chu Zhenghe's boat that was hit.
And this was not over yet. After several more luxuriously adorned boats drew near one after another, the emblem engraved on the side of the boats were all Wangdu's reputed prominent families. A group of gorgeously dressed ladies then successively leapt over the wooden planks to board Chu Zhenghe's boat. Waving their handkerchiefs, they rushed inside where the guards could not even stop them and the scene was chaotic.
After the initial shock had passed, Ye Huaiyang stared agape at the scene and muttered, "These ... these people are all coming for you?"
"Yes." Chu Zhenghe assumed a miserable expression, while Chu Jinglan tossed him a murderous look before he immediately returned to normalcy, "Alas, it's all this King's fault for being so appealing and can't even be trouble-free for the festival .. "
