"Where are we going?" Rey asked from the gunners position on the Interceptor. After their TIE race, her and Ben adopted the ship as their own, since Ben's Silencer was out of commission. It only fit one anyways.
"Mustafar," Ben said as they approached the volcanic planet.
"Isn't that a Sith planet?" Rey said with some alarm."It used to be." They descended through the planet's smoky atmosphere. "But the Sith are extinct. Even their few supporters are scattered across the galaxy. No one cares about this planet except for a few colonies here or there. Still, after I left Luke I came here. Grandfather's palace was still standing, so that's where I lived."
"Vader's palace," Rey gulped.
"Don't worry." Ben took one hand off the controls to reach behind him and touch Rey's arm comfortingly. "I never came here to revive the Sith. At the time I needed a place to stay, and it seemed Mustafar was the only place that would take me in. Now it's a good location to train. It's safe, and most importantly, the First Order doesn't know about it."
Rey was reassured. She trusted him. "I've never been to a lava planet before," she admitted.
"Someday we'll take a tour of the entire galaxy," Ben promised. Rey looked through the window of the TIE and saw Vader's castle, immediately struck with awe.
The palace was built with the same kind of dark volcanic rock that made up the ground as far as she could see. It was huge and imposing, so solid it seemed even decades of abandonment couldn't sully it. The fire and lava from a nearby river reflected warmly in the windows, giving life to the otherwise barren landscape."We should go inside right away," Ben said, watching Rey take it all in. "It's cooler there."
He expertly guided the TIE into a small hanger at the back, making sure the outside temperature was habitable before opening up the hatch.
The inside of the palace was less intimidating than she'd expected, though Rey didn't know what she expected in the first place. Instead of dark and foreboding like she'd expected, the place was well lit and spacious, if a little lonely.
"How long did you live here?" Rey asked, running her hand along the mahogany walls.
"A year," Ben said. Rey spun around.
"A year! How did you survive? How old were you?"
"I was eighteen whe I left the Jedi order," Ben said, not meeting her eyes. "I stole a ship and lived here. It was abandoned, but the generators still worked, so I fixed it up. There's a stockpile of food in the kitchen."
"Oh Ben," Rey murmured. "I can't imagine what it must have been like to live here all by yourself for so long."
"Not much different from Jakku I suppose," said Ben, unwinding his scarf and hanging it on the coat rack. "Follow me, I'll show you your room."
