By now, you should have many pieces of the puzzle, but they just don't fit together. You're missing the final most critical fragment. Just what exactly is the truth, and why is Omori protecting Sunny from it?
Let's list down what we know so far:
4 years ago, Mari committed suicide, which tore apart the friend group consisting of Basil, Kel, Aubrey, Hero, Sunny and Mari.
Also 4 years ago, there was an incident that only Basil and Sunny happen to know, which affected them even worse than Mari's suicide.
This incident is referred to as 'The Truth', as Sunny has seemed to forgotten it through the overwhelming trauma.
Due to this, Sunny no longer 'lives' in the real world, and finds refuge in Headspace, a world representing the time before the incident happened, which can only be accessed in his sleep. A type of escapism.
Inside Headspace, Sunny's supposed alter ego is in control, Omori. Omori wants to keep Sunny safe and away from the truth, which is why Headspace exists. He lives in Whitespace, an empty void filled with a tissue box, computer, sketchbook, black lightbulb, and a cat named Mewo.
The opposite of Whitespace, Blackspace, is seemingly filled with things related to Sunny's trauma, but Omori managed to keep him away from the truth by getting rid of Headspace Basil. Blackspace is almost identical to Whitespace, except that there is no lightbulb hanging from the ceiling.
Basil is incredibly attached to Sunny, as they were best friends. He believes that whatever happened during the incident, wasn't Sunny's fault. Basil wants to help Sunny get rid of the thing that's haunting him, but he himself has it too.
All the photos and memories in the Headspace photo album, are in the real world photo album, as that's what it's based on. However, it is mentioned that Sunny got a violin for Christmas, as he desperately wanted to play with Mari. The photo that Headspace Basil didn't recognise and yet felt so familiar, was of a broken violin shattered at the bottom of a staircase.
Have you catched on the hidden clue now? The suspicious lightbulb in whitespace that's filled with pitch black darkness instead of light.
Lightbulbs are used as a sign of an idea, a shining light in the darkness of scrambled thoughts. Light reveals the hidden, or unknown.
A black lightbulb represents the repression of an idea, but when broken, the truth is revealed.
The black lightbulb in white space, does exactly that.
It's been a long day today. You visited Mari's grave, and the treehouse in your backyard, all with your friends tagging along. Now you're having a sleepover at Basil's house, a great way to end the day.
'Hey Sunny, thank you for everything. It's probably been tough to leave your house after all this time...but I really appreciate you for doing it for us. And, hey! Tomorrow's the big day! I hope you're not too worried about moving to a new place...if anything, you got us! Life get's better. You just have to stay positive,' Hero chuckles, lying on the floor on his mattress.
'Hmmm life gets better huh. Hey Sunny, after you move away, you should like, come visit once in a while or something,' Aubrey suggests, sitting up on the couch.
'Yeah! Then we can all go out for some sandwiches!' Hero adds cheerfully, 'Or maybe we can all go to the park...or the beach...or just sit at home and watch TV...who knows? We can do anything!'
'Heh, that sounds kinda nice. Do you think my new friends can come too?'
'Of course they can Aubrey! You don't have to ask! The more the merrier, after all.'
'Come on guys...it's time to sleep already,' Kel butts in, throwing the blanket over his head.
'Yeah yeah, Gnight guys'
Hero yawns,'Good night Kel. Good night Aubrey. Good night Sunny. See you all in the morning...'
Closing your eyes, you slowly slip back into the darkness...
'Don't worry...everything is going to be okay'
'Will you forgive me, my best friend?'
'Please...'
