In My Cousin's Shadow

"I'll make you proud, Abuela.", Isabela promised.

"I know you will, mi vida.", Abuela cooed, kissing the top of my cousin's forehead.

Everyday. She would choose her.. over me.. Hola, my name's Dolores. I'm currently 19, almost 20 soon. My cousin, Isabela turned 20 a couple months prior. A lot of people believe Isabela is my favorite cousin and I can't blame them. We're the same age, and we share a lot of tea privately and all.

While it was true, Isabela and I are close friends, I still can't help to envy her. She's pretty and perfect and no one notices me.. mamá always tells me that I'm beautiful in my own way, but I wish people would see me like how they see Isabela...

If I could switch gifts with her for just one day, I'll gladly would. I'm grateful for my gift, but it can get quite much at times. It hurts when things are too loud and I'm so used to hiding in the comforts of my room, where it's all safe and quiet.. sometimes I'll hear certain things outside my room, but I try my best to ignore it.

It still doesn't help that I'm the shadow nobody sees.. I'm timid and quiet while she's so confident and pretty. I try to hide that I don't believe I'm attractive from my family. People don't pay attention to me anyways. I dealt with it for years ever since I've gotten my gift, but still everyone reminds silent. Papá called her "our Angel", they praise her for everything she does, but what about me?

Even him.. Mariano, the love of my life prefers her. Why am I even surprised.. he's just like them. He doesn't notice me, he probably doesn't even know me. All he cares is Isabela.. perfecta Isabela..
