"Ms. Bennett! Wait."

I turned to see my landlord, Mr. Reid hurrying towards me, a large envelope in his hand.

"Good morning, Mr. Reid," I answered as politely as possible. Mr. Reid wasn't my favorite person in the world, far from it.

The old man flashed me a friendly smile. "How are you doing, young lady? I haven't seen you around much these past weeks."

It wasn't like he was used to seeing me around the place. "The Gentlemen's Club" used to take up all my time, this job was way more flexible. He was just trying to be a smart ass.

"I've got a new job," I replied.

He gave me his best fake smile and pushed the envelope towards me. "This came in the mail for you yesterday."

So why didn't you bring it up yesterday?

Instead of being cheeky,  I said, "Thanks." taking the envelope from him. I looked down at the envelope with wide eyes.

Lister Financials.

I didn't have to look inside to know that it was a reminder that I was overdue on my loan repayment.

"The rent is due on Friday." I lifted my head back to the old man after he spoke.

I nodded. "Yes,  I know. I won't be late." That was a guarantee.

He raised his eyebrows then nodded but his gaze told me he was unconvinced. It wasn't a secret that I'd had problems paying my rent early in the past. However since I've started working for Holden I've been slowly clearing up all my debts, soon enough  I won't have much left.

"I have to get to work now, so I'll see you around, Mr. Reid." With a parting nod to Mr. Ried, I stepped out of the apartment building.

I pushed the envelope in my back and started walking in the direction of the bus stop.

Good things were coming my way...

I can feel it.

.....

Using my biometrics I unlocked the townhouse door. There was no sense of welcome as I entered the elegant suite.

I've worked here for a few weeks, but yet it still didn't feel like much of a home, especially not one that Holden had dreamed of living in.  It was as sterile and impersonal.

I removed the envelope from my handbag and tossed the bag on the table by the door. I went into the kitchen and grabbed a cub from the cabinet. If there was one thing I appreciate about Holden was the fact that he made coffee every morning before leaving for work.

I walked over to the Keurig coffee machine and turned it on. I popped on the stool around the island and looked at the return label on the white envelope. It was from Lister Financials, an agency that I took out a loan of five thousand dollars, which I used to pay Kieran's medical bills.

I groaned inwardly. I was three months behind on my payments. They were probably sending me a reminder to pay or else they'll be reporting me to the credit bureau, sinking my social security even more.

I placed the envelope on the counter and rubbed my temples for a few seconds before picking it back up.

I ripped the envelope open and removed the letter.

"This is a reminder ....."

I didn't bother to read the rest, I already knew what it said.

I sighed and glanced at the coffee that was beginning to dispense.
