A slight twist to Fenris' Questioning Beliefs quest
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fenris is heading towards Lowtown for a night of Wicked Grace at the Hanged Man when he's jumped in an alley. His attacker is much faster than expected and Fenris is knocked unconscious.
When he comes to, he realizes he's in handcuffs. His assailant is making a deal with someone around the corner, and when the pair realizes Fenris is awake, they approach. To Fenris' shock, his attacker is none other than Garrett Hawke, and the person he was dealing with is Danarius. "Garrett? What is the meaning of this?" Fenris snarls. Garret ignores him and looks over at Danarius. "You'll have your coin once he's on the ship." "I understand." Danarius' guards approach and roughly pull Fenris to his feet, keeping their grip tight as they force him along the path. "Garrett, you lying scum-" One of the guards hits him. "Shut it, slave. You're with us now." Garrett keeps his hood up as he follows the small group towards the docks.
Unknown to him, Varric had been watching from afar the entire time. "Oh Waffles, what are you doing..." he mutters under his breath. "Hawke's gonna kill him." He quickly rushes to the Hanged Man and slams the door open as he runs inside. Marian, Aveline, and Isabela are all waiting at a table in the center of the room. "Hawke! We got trouble!" "Varric? What's going on?" "I'll explain on the way. We gotta get to the docks as fast as we can." The three women quickly get up and follow Varric out into the street. "I'm warning you now though, Hawke. You're...not gonna like what you see." "What are you talking about? What's going on?" "It's your brother. He...well, I guess you'll see what he did when we get there."
The four of them arrive at the docks just as Danarius' guards are trying to force Fenris below deck. Marian is horrified. "Fenris!" The slavers scramble to defend themselves, but they are no match for the Champion and her companions. As soon as the fighting starts, Garrett tries to slip away unnoticed, but Varric shoots him in the back of the thigh, and he falls to his knees. After the guards are taken out, Isabela keeps Danarius down while Aveline gets Fenris out of the handcuffs. He wastes no time in approaching Danarius with a vengeful glare. "You...are no longer my master," he says as he snaps Danarius' neck. Marian rushes to Fenris' side. "Are you alright? What happened?" Fenris glares over at the hooded figure on the shore. "Why don't you ask your brother?" "What?" Marian looks over at the person that Varric still has Bianca aimed at, and she feels bile rising in the back of her throat as she realizes she recognizes the figure. "It can't be..." she whispers.
Marian slowly walks over to the figure, and as soon as he sees her standing in his peripheral, Garrett pulls back his hood. Marian stumbles back in shock, her wide eyes glued to her brother. "Garrett? What- why did you- what are you doing here?" When he says nothing in response, she looks back and forth between him and Fenris, horror on her face as she realizes what had happened. Her shock quickly turns to rage. "You...were you trying to sell Fenris back into slavery? After everything he told us about Danarius?" Garrett lifts his head and glares over at the elf before looking back up at his sister. "He doesn't deserve you." "Excuse me?! What the fuck kind of answer is that?"
Garrett reaches back and yanks the arrow of his leg with a loud grunt, then pulls his legs under himself so that he can push himself up to his feet. He then goes and sits on a stone staircase where he can look up at his sister properly. "He hates mages. You've heard him say it. I've heard him say it. What makes you think he could ever care for you?" Marian stares at him dumbfounded, her jaw agape. "First of all, my romantic life is none of your business. Second of all, are you honestly trying to say that slavery should be the punishment for him rejecting me one time?" "For him, certainly." Marian turns away with a loud scoff, the disbelief clear on her face. "I can't believe what I'm hearing. My own brother," she snaps, whirling around to face him, "is trying to tell me he condones slavery. What the fuck, Garrett." "He left you!" Garrett yells. Marian's face twists as she points an angry finger at him. "No, you left me, Garrett. You did, right after mother died." Garrett opens his mouth to retort but doesn't have a chance as Marian rails into him. "Right when I needed my brother the most, you just up and disappeared from Kirkwall without a trace, and I didn't hear from you for weeks. Fenris was there for me, Garrett, not you, so don't you dare try to tell me that he is undeserving when you are the one who abandoned me." Garrett looks away, his face flush with shame. "I...needed some time." "Well I needed my brother." "What do you want me to say, Marian?" "How about saying "sorry" to start with? To me? To Fenris?"
