“Lydia, you have to help me so that Clove doesn’t volunteer.” Cato begs. “I know. I’m going to invite her over later today and I’ll make sure that she doesn’t volunteer.” She says.
“I’ve been so worried that she’ll volunteer. I know that she can’t win because she’s too young.” Cato says.
“She won’t volunteer and if you want to volunteer than I promise that you’ll get home.” Lydia promises him. “Thank you.” He says, hugging her.
I can’t stand watching them talk about me behind my back so I walk towards them. “You two think it’s okay to talk about someone behind their back?” I say. They turn around and stare at me with shock in their eyes.
“Wha- What are you doing here?” Cato asks me. “I just wanted to come and talk to you guys but you’re talking about me behind my back and that hurts.” I tell them.
“Clove, we’re sorry! Please forgive us.” Cato begs. “Why should I?” I ask him.
“If we explain ourselves could you, at least, think of forgiving us?” Lydia asks me. I nod so they start to explain.
“You never know how old the volunteers from One will be. The tributes from One are usually very skilled in archery and spear throwing. We know that you’re skilled in knife throwing but they could still overpower you.” Lydia says.
“I’m sorry that I worried you like that.” I tell them. “What do you mean?” Cato asks. “I never planned on volunteering.” I say.
Cato runs and picks me up in a big hug. “I was so worried. I can’t imagine watching you die!” He says, through tears.
“I’d never do anything like that to you.” I say kissing him. “You two are my best friends and I’m never going to leave you guys.” I tell them.
“We have to go out and celebrate!” Lydia says, giggling and beaming.
I’m too scared to tell them that I might have to volunteer this year.
