Part 4 – Headmasters Office
Our headmaster opens the door to his office and sees us standing outside of the door. “What are you two doing outside of my office?” He asks. “Well, umm… We came to talk to you about one of your professors.” Cato says slowly. “And who is that?” He asks. “Professor Ivory.” Cato answers. “Well, that’s easy. She’s in my office right now so come on in.” He says.
We walk into his office and we see professor Ivory sitting there. Professor Twigge closes the door. “Michiru, these are the student’s you were talking about?” Professor Twigge asks. “Yes, Suri, it’s them.” Professor Ivory says. “Why are you two throwing knives at other students?” “We weren’t!” Cato argues. “Silence! Do not yell at me!” Professor Twigge growls. “Sir, may I explain?” I ask politely. “Yes, you may, miss Greenleaf.” He says. “Cato was tossing me a knife so that we can begin training. We don’t know why professor Ivory thought that we were throwing knives at each other.” I explain.
Professor Twigge, Professor Ivory, Cato and I spend a long time talking but in the end professor Twigge believed Cato and I. Professor Twigge says that we won’t fire her but if he hears that she throws knives at any other students then he won’t hesitate to fire her.
Professor Ivory, Cato and I walk out of his office and while we’re walking down the hall professor Ivory says, “I’m sorry about what I did.” Cato looks at me and I ask, “Why did you do it?” “The last time I went to the Capitol they showed my Games and I have spent so much time trying to forget them that I went momentarily crazy.” She says. “If you don’t mind me asking but what happened in your games that was so bad?” I ask her.
Professor Ivory is hesitant but she finally tells us. “My brother was fourteen when he was reaped and I was eighteen when I volunteered.” She begins. She doesn’t continue but motions for Cato and I to follow her.
We walk into the forest behind the academy and a far way into the forest until we reach a small park area. Professor Ivory sits on one of the benches so Cato and I sit on the bench opposite hers. “My brother and I went into the same games and obviously only one of us came out alive.” She says.
I gasp. I can’t believe that she had to watch her brother die! “To make a long story short, my brother and I were the last two tributes left and I was forced to kill him. When I got back home my parents were so mad at me that they disowned me and so I lived on my own but what they didn’t understand at the time and will never understand that killing my own brother was the hardest thing for me to do. We were so close that I killed a part of myself when I killed him.” She finishes. I’m in shock that she killed her own brother so I just stare into the forest.
Professor Ivory leaves without saying anything. “Cato, I have to go home now. My mother’s probably worrying about me.” I tell him and run off home.
“Mother, I’m so sorry I’m late!” I call. “Clove! You’re alright!” My mother comes running and picks me up in a hug. “I thought something had happened to you!” “I’m okay, there just came something up at school.” I tell her. “What was it?” She asks. “Can I tell you when I wake up tomorrow? I’m really tired.” I say and walk to my room. “Okay…” My mother says slowly.
The last thing I remember before going to sleep is thinking how it would be to go into the games with Cato and have to kill him.
