As I woke up, I heard a noise. Like a scary loud thumping bang noise. I looked over to see Luis sleeping. Close your eyes, Nicole, it's just the wind. I reassured myself, but heard yet another noise. Someone was definitely downstairs. Wide awake and alert, I quickly got up and tiptoed to Luis's room.
"Luis." I shook him to wake up. Glass shattered downstairs. "Luis!" I whispered as I shook him harder. "There's someone downstairs!" I said.
"Hmm?" He asked, still asleep. I went to his bathroom and cupped my hands and turned on the faucet, cold water filling in my hands. I ran to the bedroom, the water still running as I splashed Luis.
"What the he-" I covered his mouth as he jumped up.
"Luis." I called. "I think there is someone downstairs." A man's voice made my heart drop. Luis's eyes widened as he got up to his closet. He searched till he found a wooden bat.
"Stay here." He said as he crept out the room and downstairs. I could hear his footsteps getting quieter. I bit my fingertips.
"Please be nothing, please be nothing." I prayed, tears in my eyes.
"Hey!" I heard Luis's voice before hearing a punching sound. I heard an object connecting with another. Get up! Go downstairs! My mind kept yelling, but my legs weren't connecting with the command as they felt like rubber. A deep voice I didn't recognize was yelling. The house shook as someone was pushed to the wall. I could hear something dropping on the floor. Then complete silence. No one was moving or no more shattering of glass. My heart pounded as I began to worry. Where was Luis? Was he okay? I tried my best to take out any bad ideas that he was lying in a pool of blood or knocked out.
Then, suddenly someone was coming up the stairs. I couldn't even feel my legs to get up and hide. My voice was trembling with fear as the steps got closer and closer. A shadow appeared on the door frame as it got closer.
Luis then walked in the room. I exhaled as relief took over my body.
"Hey, honey, you're shaking." Luis said as he took my hands that couldn't stop moving.
"Who.. who.. was.. it?" I managed to say, my voice trembling.
"Some robber. Police are on the way. Sweetheart, you're in shock." He said as he hugged me. "It's okay. We're gonna be just fine." He reassured. But I didn't feel comforted by his words. Fear had trickled down my spine and was staying there as a permanent resident. I looked at Luis's eyes, tears welling in mine.
"Your cheek. It's bleeding." I said, feeling the cut.
"Yeah. The guy got me good. I think some ice will fix it. Plus, my eye is swollen shut." He said.

After the police came, I decided to check downstairs. There were shards of glass everywhere. "Who was it?" I asked as I held Luis's hand.
"Hard to tell, but we'll patrol on this street to see if he returns. You guys have a good night." The cop said as he left. Silence filled the air as we were all alone. Terror was in my eyes as any sudden movement would send me to panic.
"Nikki, honey. No one is going to get passed me. I promise you the next time he or anyone comes here, they won't survive." Luis said. It still didn't make me feel any better. "How about some tea?" He asked.
"No, it's okay. I'm going back to bed." I said although I didn't move,
"I think there's some surveillance cameras hooked up outside. I can go and-" He stopped as my grip got tighter.
"Just do it tomorrow, please?" I asked, not wanting to be alone. He sighed as we went upstairs.
"You should sleep with me, tonight. For, protection." He said. I couldn't agree more. We walked in his room, a mess as he was searching for a weapon. I laid to the far right away from him, sitting up. "Ugh here." He grabbed my waist and pulled me next to him. "You'll be just fine." He kissed my head as I closed my eyes and tried to go to sleep.
