A MONTH LATER...

Another day on the docks, Wade thought. Fishing nearly every morning was getting boring. Yes it provided time to think and relax, and on some days dinner, but spending his life on a boat for hours and hours wasn’t exactly living the dream.

A sparrow came and sat by his tin of bait. He ignored it and got on the boat. The lake was a nasty brown colour that nobody liked to look at. Probably why the lake wasn't Riverview's greatest hotspots. More space for him.

Grey clouds filled the morning sky as usual, blocking any sun from getting through.

Riverview was a quiet little island with a bridge coming in from New York City. Another reason why the lake was so empty, New Yorkers didn’t go fishing. It was a small sort of cosy place that some families like to retreat to on the weekends. The only attractions here were the high mountains; lord knows how snowy mountains got onto the island near NYC, and the private school, Riverview Prep.

He got into the boat, nearly falling off because his wellington boots were for some reason slippery today.

He felt the crisp air fall onto his rosy cheeks. His blocked nose was shiny and purple, due to fishing in cold weather.

The sparrow flew away as the boat started to move. He put his navy blue beanie hat on and covered his cold red ears. He then started to row away from the docks.

He knew he had homework in for tommorow and shouldn’t stay out long today . He attended the private school here. His mom had to work three jobs to keep him in the school. He was very grateful, but had a hard time showing it.

He rowed faster until he could hardly see what was left of the docks. He couldn’t see any of the houses anymore (as if there were many near this stunning view), then he knew he could start fishing.

He got his fishing rod ready with the bait on the hook, and swung into the water.

His phone buzzed in the pocket of his rain mac. He didn’t bother picking it up. It was his spare time and he wanted to relax.

10 minutes later his phone buzzed again. Who could be calling him? He picked his phone up and held it to his ear.

“Hello?” He answered.

“Hey, it’s your mom. Do you mind picking up the groceries later. I can’t get out of work an-”

Suddenly something pulled on his rod. It was so heavy, it must have been a big one. “Sure mom, just wait!” He tried pulling it out but then the unknown fish started pulling him in.

Then his phone went from his ear, into the water. He cursed under his breath. He lost control and let his rod go, but his phone was much more important.

He then decided he would have to go in. Besides, he could see it flashing in the water anyway.

He climbed out of his boat and into the freezing cold water, only realising he just entered a lake, not a public swimming pool.

The water went up to his chest. He could see his phone flashing. He tried to grab it.

He got it. Well he got something? It wasn’t his phone; at least it didn’t feel like his phone. He pulled it out of the water and threw it onto the boat.

He climbed back on, shivering in his place. He then looked at the bottom of the boat.

It was flashing. It was flashing a purple colour. It was a crystal. He picked it up, still shivering.

It was some sort of necklace. Was it electric? He had no clue. It didn’t look like anything he’d seen before in his life.

He’d just managed to get his phone out of the water before rowing again.

When he got back to shore ten minutes later from his very short fishing trip, Jim, the guy he rented the boat out, was standing at the edge of the dock, smoking Tabaco.

“Why go in, Wade?” He said, shaking his head disappointingly. Wade pulled himself up. He then nodded at Jim then walked away, stripping off his damp clothes.

He still had the necklace in his hands. He was going to inspect it when he got home.

He then realized his stuff was still on the boat.
