I know I said this would be a series of one-shots but I'm just going to make it into a story. Thank you to the wonderul @CourageisRed for giving me some great ideas for this story.
Layla's POV
The heat of the morning sun is unbearable. It's even worse when you have to sit out in it for two hours while you wait for your dad to finish up morning practice.
There is literally no where to escape to at Dauntless High. It's out in the middle of no mans land, stuck right in the middle of Texas. My dad is the coach of the High School football team here and every morning I'm forced to go to these practices because we only have two cars. My mom takes the other one to go to work so I'm stuck car pooling.
The aluminum metal bench sticks to my thighs and I mentally curse myself for wearing a sundress on such a hot day like this. I look out over the field and watch as my dad instructs the team to do a series of plays.
My eyes watch Four pass the ball to a wide reciever. Four is the best quarterback this state has seen in the past 10 years or so our local news paper says. Contrary to popular belief, he's not the usual stuck up quarterback who dates the slutty cheerleader. He is a nice a guy who has a classy girlfriend. He never seeks attention and always tries to help the other guys on the team when he can.
I'm proud to say that he is a close friend.
Another play is underway and just as Four is about to pass the ball again, he gets tackled to the ground. Eric stands over him. Four doesn't move for a few seconds and my heart rate picks up. I hear a loud whistle blow and look over to my dad who is walking to both of the boys.
"You're not supposed to tackle him like that, Eric!" My dad screams in his face.
Four slowly stands and rolls his shoulders a couple of times. He looks over at me and gives a reassuring nod that tells me he's okay. Eric's gaze follows his and suddenly he's looking at me. I can't really see his face because of the helmet he's wearing but I can see his eyes and they are penatrating.
Eric and I have gone to school together since kindergarden. Back in the day, he was actually a nice guy then once we got into 9th grade everything changed. He started hanging out with the older football players and constantly went to the gym. He was no longer a little boy. Literally.
The crush I used to have on him soon wore off after I saw him with countless girls. He never keeps a steady girlfriend. What do they call what he does? Oh yeah, hump and dump.
"All right! Gather round boys!" I hear my father call. They all gather into a big circle and kneel in front of him.
I stand up and gather my things. Home room doesn't start for another 30 minutes but I'm always early to class anyways.
The whole team stands together and some run off into the locker rooms to take showers while others run to the water hose.
Four jogs up to me and bumps my shoulder with his. I make a face at him. "You smell terrible." I joke with him. He laughs. "Will you tell Tris, if you see her, to save me a seat in homeroom?"
"Sure, no problem." He gives me a side hug and I try pushing him away. "Seriously, go take a shower!" He raises his arms in front of me and brings his armpit to my face. "What? I smell amazing!"
I cover my face with both my hands trying to block his aweful body odor. He just continues to laugh before running off to the locker rooms.
As I continue to walk to the back entrance to the school, I hear heavy footsteps behind me. The way the shoes dig into the ground tell me that it's another football player. A warm body is suddenly close to my back.
"Aren't you and Four just so cute? Does Tris know about you two?" I don't even need to turn around to know that it's Eric. I continue to walk like I didn't hear him. Out here, he won't make a move towards me because he knows my dad can see but in home room, it's all open game.
We have assigned seats in that class and unfortunately for me, he sits right behind me. I can already tell that it's going to be a bad day.
So what do you think so far??? I'm pretty sure I'm going to update again tonight. If any of you have ever watched the tv series Friday Night Lights, this is kind of based around that. I made Four a little more friendly just because I can. I mean, in this he doesn't have to worry about being Divergent so there's not as much tension. Vote and Comment!
